I have both a ACR and a SCAR 17s... and a Sig 516. So I can speak as an actual user to the differences of either against an AR platform gun.

For me, here's the difference:

AR: Well known. Super modular with today's accessories / build options. An AR can be whatever you want it to be... from cheap to mega expensive. You really can't go wrong with an AR.

ACR: Incredibly designed and thought out. This is an engineer's gun... you can tell. Shoots well, but it hasn't caught on like I had hoped and the promised 3rd party accessories haven't really materialized nor have the optional caliber change kits. Buy this gun if you want to have a product improved AR and are willing to risk it never catching on.

SCAR: Accurate. Low Recoil. Lightweight. AK-simple. Decent 3rd party support for a new gun. My biggest complaint is that everything for a SCAR is expensive... even the magazines. Buy this gun if you have the cash and caliber change isn't a big deal... and/or you want the best .308 assault rifle out.

Thanks for the synopsis. Where does the Sig 516 fall into the mix?

I'd say the Sig 516 is your typical high-end AR-15 pattern rifle just with a piston system.

I'm a lefty, and DI AR's drive me nuts because the burnt gas leaving the chamber from the ejection ports tends to go straight up my nose. So I tend to gravitate towards piston guns and guns with ambidextrous controls.

That said, The Sig 516 is a great shooter, and unless someone told you, you might not realize it's a piston gun.

Pros: It's an AR. Most AR accessories will work with it except some of those that deal with the gas system. Runs VERY clean with low heat build-up.

Cons: The piston system adds about a half-pound of weight in hardware to the front of the gun. Not a big deal for some. YMMV. Pricier than most DI AR's (though not all for sure).

So how would you rate the SCAR, ACR, and Sig 516 in order of love? Just curious.

All three (and the Sig 556 & 556-R) are intriguing to me. I like the advancements made in the SCAR & ACR, just not enough to pay the going rates. I admire the progress though and if they drop in price I'd love to pick one up. Still, a reliable piston AR seems to have most of the advantages that any of us would know, and the Sig 516 & ACR let you have AR triggers, which would be nice. I really think most want to love the SCAR, and they have their won-over fans, I just think the price tag is killing it for most of us and we're collectively trying to justify getting one.

-Cheers

Get a high quality AR, they work and don't cost a whole bunch to keep up and spare parts are available almost everywhere and aren't super expensive.

Cost of SCAR 17S magazines are around $40 each.

i really like this gun , its just too much money . would i get it? without a doubt - its just impressive. although i have never shot it it looks awesome to shoot .

far as ugly, its not. its just the ass end looks like the upside down face kid on family guy : ) . and really who cares long as it works.

i say get it, you can always sell it . another option i was considering was a Colt 901
but as noted on Colt 901 Modular Carbine .308/.223 – New Gun Review – LE901-16S
--The MSRP, which on the Colt 2012 official retail price list includes tax, is $2,129--

@#%# ! plus the recoil must be more but it doesnt look bad

another note , i grabbed a semi auto 308 at a gun show , heavy heavy heavy !!
thats gotta be the best points of a scar H along with recoil

i think its a gas piston AR for me and a XDM 4.5 and ... !!

I can compare the SCAR 17S against my other .308Win rifles, lighter in weight and lowest felt recoil than any of the others. The recoil almost feels like I'm shooting a 5.56mm rifle.

Life is short. I say get both. hehe

The scar is heavier than most of my AR's. Probably because of the piston setup and huge bolt. It does cycle slow, but it is a very soft shooter. Ergonomically speaking, it is comfortable, but nothing beats a nice light AR. It's hard to choose. If someone were to ask me today what they should do with their $2 grand rifle money. I would say get a Larue Predatar w/ micro dot and be done with it.
