You should have red jacket build it. All kidding aside I have absolutley nothing to say that would help you in your build other then it would be damn cool and should have no trouble taking down a pig or a zombie.

I also don't have any pointers for you, but am wishing you luck and praying for pictures! .458 is one of those builds that I hope i'll have the money to do one of these days...with that said, Rock River Arms makes them if you are looking for parts or ideas.

A big negative on having RJF build it.

Keep in mind, you need an upper receiver that has an enlarged ejection port.

Wilson Combat is about to release a line of parts & uppers specifically for the SOCOM round.

Is this just kind of a novelty gun your building because why not or are you really looking for a hog gun.

My favorite hog guns are cheap lever actions 30-30s. I really like the Henry big boy 44 mag too.

I doubt you'll get any honest answers seeking pointers about zombie apocalypse experience.

Only a lot of hypethical stupid what-if BS.

It's both actually. I have a lot of combat trigger time with the platform so creating a hog gun from an AR really appeals to me. It will be an extension of my body unlike a bolt action or lever gun...or anything else for that matter. It will also allow me the opportunity to use optics and gear I already have.

The .458 socom will drop just about anything in North America so the list of uses is long.

And I think it's cool, too.

AR-10 308 will bring down a hog be cheaper and easier to get parts/ammo for. But if its just a build to have kind of thing I say go for it.

If you are going to build/buy one i recommend a carbine length gas system. Since its a relatively low pressure round it needs the shorter system to ensure it has the pressure to cycle the action, especially with some of the heavier bullets.
As a side note, its REALLY awesome how many bullet choices you have to load the round with. Its essentially a semi auto sharps rifle, its frikkin fun. Brass is a little harder as only starline makes the .458 bass, but they are really good quality so they last for several loadings.
