AR at 400 yards

Had pretty good results and learned a lot about trajectory. Air was calm today but I want to go back on a breezy day and start to learn wind drift. Zeroed at 200 yards put me about an inch high at 100, 3" low at 300, and (surprising to me) about 28" low at 400. I didn't have a tape measure but at 400 I'd estimate 8-10" groups. I'm planning on shooting different bullet weights to see what effect it has. All this was with 55gr's.

The rifle is a mostly stock Stag 3G with a Nikon Pro-Staff 4-12x.

Yep, I'd have to go with a lot more scope power!

In Marine Corps boot camp, we shot out to 600 meters with iron sights on an A2 rifle.

As a matter of fact, I shot the highest score out of my entire platoon.

With the way my eyesight is now, I would probably have to use a high power scope to get out that far. I'll probably never know, due to the lack of 600 meter KD ranges in the midwest.

We shoot service rifle matches with iron sights. Those 600 yard target are pretty large though.

your scopes fine assuming its all locked down nice and tight

IMO cheapest way to improve your lot is get some green tips 62 grains for bulk shooting best choice for 400 yards. Of course if you keep your brass and know someone that reloads 556 and has some 70 (if you have a 1/7 twist 77) bullets that might work better yet for you.

IMO 8" group first time out with 55grain bullets your doing darn good.

My favorite local range now has human sized steel silhouettes at various ranges, out to 450 yards.
With both irons and RDS, and a 25meter zero, I can consistently hit center of mass on the 450, no problem, no big deal. I love the ping of lead on steel!
Anyone remotely considering themselves a rifleman/marksman should be able to do that.
If someone can't do that, they need some sort of formal training, BSA, CMP, Appleseed or military.
