1:7 vs 1:9 twist question

I was going to go with a 1:9 barrel, but can't get it right now. Can get the 1:7 though. Question is, how is the 1:7 with 55 gr bullets. I'll be shooting mostly 55gr and 62gr bullets. Also, any truth to the 1:7 twist having issues with throat erosion?

If you are only shooting 55 and 62 just go with the 1;9.

1/7 shoots 55 gr bullets just fine. Added advantage of shooting heavier/longer bullets better than 1/9. I own 1/7; 1/8; 1/9. They all shoot 55gr bullets great.

I shoot a 1:7 16" (BCM). Shoots 55 gr absolutely fine. Although I have not shot lighter loads than that, I have heard of 1:7s having some accuracy problems with sub-55g varmint loads. That said, 1:9s are probably fine for most shooters, but 1:9s can be hit or miss above 70 gr - some shoot ok, some are bad. I wanted to fire 75 and 77 gr, so 1:7 was the way to go for me.

Actually, 1:9 is fine with heavier rounds at sub 200 yd. distances. It is preferred for varmint loads at all distances. 1:8 would be a better "compromise" choice , IMO.

Shooting 55 and 62 grain rounds I have had no issues with them out of my 1/7 barrel shooting out to 300 yards (max distance at my range).

Regardless of what anyone tells you OP, ^this^ will be the case with almost all rifles of either twist (include 1:8 as well). You can even extend the lower range to 45 gr for most rifles.

Personally I have a 1:9 FWIW.

When I buy the next one, I'm getting 1:8

Well, I think I'm going to get the 1:7(since it's all DD has in stock). Now I have a to decide if I want the mid-length 16" or get a 14.5" and attach the YHM Phantom permantly. I think I would like the look of the 14.5" but not sure about not being able to take the FSP off if needed.

It really comes down to the specific bullet which would need to be tested on your platform, but generally speaking a 1:9 is fine for roughly 45gr to around 62gr (again, depends on specific bullet) while a 1:7 is good from roughly 55gr to around 75gr or thereabouts.

IMHO, of greater importance is how each stabilizes a specific bullet based on barrel length and velocity. Using the Mk318 Mod0 as a reference, if you scroll down the following page a little, you'll see graphs on the stabilization based on barrel spin/twist rate. It's just an example.
