Have decided to build a Varmint rifle. Need parts help.
I want to build an AR that has a 20" heavy barrel, knurled free float tube, ace skeleton stock, and a single stage trigger.
I have a stag model 1 and will be using the lower from it. I want to keep the upper intact so I can throw it back on for short range hog hunting and plinking.
I really like the spiral fluted barrels but am not against a straight fluted one. I like the clean look of a target crown but also am curious about putting a muzzle brake on as I have never owned or shot with one. How much would the brake help at 300-500 yards compared to a target crown? Also I don't think I want a chrome lined barrel. I'm not going to shoot 10000 rounds a year. Help me find a barrel.
Is there a difference in quality of free float tubes? What makes one better? Also does the barrel but come with the tube since it doesn't have a delta ring?
Any good places to find barrels and the other parts I mentioned would help a bunch. Also if a part is not good please tell me why.

Why are you going 20 inch barrel over 24"? I have shot the 24" and it is great at 500 yards. If you want a long range target gun consider going to 24". Now I havent shot the 20" barrel so I can only speak to the 24". If you do go 20" write back and let us know your experience with that. Thanks!

Cant help everywhere, and some specs may not match up to your requests, but I'm working on my coyote build right now and I think I've settled on an RRA Varmint A4 upper. For some reason my internet sucks tonight and wont let me go there to give you a link. Good luck man. I love those Ace stocks btw. Prob gonna get one for mine eventually.

5.56 gains full velocity in 22ish"....so he won't lose hardly anything in accuracy, and he'll drop some weight in the front end (helpful in a hunting rifle)

I'm not against getting a 24. Just figured if I got a 20 with a threaded barrel and put on a brake. It would be getting close to 23-24".
I really love the double star midnight dragon.

I run a 26" .936 White Oak Armament barrel on my varmint/bench rig. The gun is HEAVY tipping the scales at 16 pounds. It does not need a brake as the recoil is very light because of the weight. I shoot a ton at 500 yards and have got 5 shot groups in the 5" range. I know it could do better with a solid rest and bench as my average groups at 100 yards were in the .5-.625 range. For ease of setting up, I am shooting off of bags, plywood and saw horses. Needless to say I can still tear up my 12"X10" plate when the wind is cooperating with me. I'm running one of their 2.25" X 14.5" FF tubes as the gas system on this barrel is 2" longer than a standard rifle length. The tube locked down tight and has been trouble free. I highly recommend White Oak Armament!

You'll do better without the brake than with, for varmint hunting. My first AR build used an 18" bull RRA barrel with .223 Wylde chamber. It's a tackdriver, but heavy as heck.
Friend of mine has a Predator Pursuit that uses a 20" heavy (but not bull) barrel that's at least as accurate as my build, but much lighter. Has 1/8 twist, like mine. I wish I'd have known about the Predator Pursuit barrel when I built the bull barrel upper.
I'm using a single-stage JP enterprises trigger/hammer combo.
Chances are, you won't be taking many, if any varmint shots at over 400 yds. The 20" barrel will be fine for that and won't be so noseheavy.

+1 on white oak. Great guy to deal with. I had one of there barrels on a past build. I have the stag model 6 that I use as my varmint rifle. They claim .5 moa if you buy the complete gun. I think their uppers are $600 with the 24inch SS barrel.

I've got a 20 inch stainless bull barrel and it's pretty hefty. I wanted a 24 inch when I started out but am glad I ended up with the 20 because I can't see wanting to be much more accurate then it is already. The recoil is almost nonexistent with the weight so I wouldnt see need anything on the end of it. The fluting could be helpful in reducing weight I'm in the process of building a lower have the lpk and need the rest. I'm putting it on my spikes lower with the collapsable stock. Think I want to get an A2 stock for it though. Although this weekend while hunting it was useful being able to shorten it while sitting in a spot that made the full extention that I usually use uncomfortable. Anyone with a regular stock wanna chime in on there preference?
