55gr TAP. HP and FMJ would also work. 556 doesn't penetrate as much as a pistol round or even 00 buck in either 12 or 20 ga. You do however need to be aware of what is on the other side of the wall. I don't care who you are, there is still the possability of a miss.

I agree. I use the 5.56 75gr LE TAP (in the red box, not the black FPD.) As that's sometimes hard to find, I also have several hundred rounds of the .223 LE variety. SGammo.com or ammuntiontogo.com usually have it in stock.

.223 55gr Barnes TSX, either Federal's Vital-Shok line or I've recently been finding a good price on Barnes VOR-TX. I've made headshots on silhouettes at 300 yards with it, it puts deer down with authority, and my AR's like it.

And folks, those buckshot rounds you're slinging out of your shotguns will penetrate just as much, if not more than many .223 rounds...in fact, most handgun bullets will penetrate more walls than .223.

I see alot of people buying this at my LGS, and they say its what they use for home defense in their AR's.

Right now I've got some Wolf surplus 55gr HP loaded. If I needed to use my AR for self defense it'd be down a stairwell. That said if I was startled, I would grab my FNP40, which is on my nightstand and my SR556 right next to the night stand.

Actually a .223 with a non barrier blind HP will penetrate less than 00buckshot or a 9mm.

I keep Hornady Tap hps. 75gr.

Sounds like TAP is the way to go.

75 grain technically better than 55?

Assuming it shoots and feeds right for me and my shooting....

It's not the brand it's the caliber and the fact that the round is not barrier blind. You can get the same results with a good SP or HP that's not barrier blind.

Nobody except the military would hobble themselves with an fmj when there are excellent SP and HPs available.
