.. I got that he was a photographer.. What is an electronic viewfinder exactly and why is it not as good?

You guys are missing the key takeaway - it's only 4x, and thus advertises a max range of detection @ 450 yards, and even though it's got IR stuff, it doesn't have a rangefinder (presumably because @ 4x, there's not enough drop to worry too badly on large targets).

Here's a very fast explanation (sorry, pressed for time)....
Electronic viewfinders are what you would usually find on point and shoot cameras. On nice cameras like SLRs your viewfinder would create the image by looking "through the lens (TTL)" and this is the more preferable method. Its more accurate representation of the actucal image, simpler, faster and if I had to choose between the two I would go with all glass and no electronics. This school of thought applies to scopes as well as cameras.

Absolutely. A good optical viewfinder provides a bright detailed scene. Everything is crisp and easy to identify. I've found electronic viewfinders much more difficult to use.
A good example would be reviewing images on your digital camera's screen. Often times they look great in the field. When you get the same images into your computer and view them at full resolution on a large monitor you notice the focus is blown.
I can re-shoot photos, I can't recall bullets.
In gun sights the exception to the rule is going to be night vision or infra red. Systems that let me see more than would be possible with traditional optics.
I'd be interested in a hybrid. An optical scope with some sort of prism or mirror system that overlays the night vision, IR, or other electronically enhanced scene over the optical image.
Leica, Fuji, and Nikon are all experimenting with hybrid viewfinders. Does something like it exist in a scope?
