Agree that it looks like it isn't lining up correctly. The round, at least from the pics looks like it is under the bolt. Not sure if that is the issue but from the angle of the pics it is possible.
It does look too dry and I would try the same with less rounds in the mag. USMC loads 28 for a reason

I guess I should have asked Santa for better reading and comprehension skills. Thanx for the correction.
With that understanding then, I would look at where the bolt is lining up with the back of the round when the bolt is open.

I have to agree with trying fewer rounds, I was thinking about that and it looks like a possible tension/ friction issue since it is the first round out of the mag.
It could still be a combo issue. There is a chance of of buffer/spring match with semi/auto bolt. He can try to just pull the charging handle all the way back and release instead of pressing the release, that should help determine that.
I would try the extra lube and 2 less rounds first. If that doesn't work, then try a different spring and buffer.
But first some more pics from front to rear view.

I'll get pics of the feed ramps when I break it down for cleaning later today. However, the more I think about it, I think you guys are right about the lube. I shot this gun straight out of the box, so I'm sure it was too dry. Is CLP breakfree good enough for an AR, or is a little heavier lube needed?

Ah ha! Let's not overthink this. OF COURSE it's too dry! CLP will work fine, but I prefer Mobil 1, 15W50. Bolt and carrier should be "wet".

yep, bolt was too dry. took the BCG completely down and cleaned it up with CLP and put a very light coat of hoppes #9 and it slams the round home just like it should.

I got turned on to CLP a couple years ago and never looked back. CLP break free is good stuff I use it in my AR (and everything else I own).

CRC makes a spray called dry silicone. It goes on wet and dries leaving a thin film of silicone behind. It isn't the main lube to use but it can act as a back up for when things get a little dry. Really good for mag followers and springs.

This is another example of why we should clean and lube new rifles before firing them.
Live and Learn, run 'em wet!
