I want a 30 cal for deer hunting

Ok I want a 30 cal r15 or similar style ..

I really like the camo look..

What would you guys recommend..?? Go with a Remington R15 in 30rar or step up to the larger heavier 308.

Any one have experience with remingtons r15?

Any input would be greatly appreciated, this would be my first AR style rifle

Why not a complete AR lower + a 7.62 x 39 complete upper configured to your liking + camo dip of your choice? Cheaper to shoot than 30 RAR and .308, and it will still take deer.

I did two AR15 builds in 7.62x39 this year. I have a 16" with a 4-12x40 Leupy Rifleman and a 10.5" AR pistol. Both use carbine length gas systems and carbine buffers. Both run like sewing machines.

You can build a reliable 16" gun with no fuss at all. Just make sure you have M4 feedramps on the upper receiver and barrel extension. If you don't, a dremel and green grinding cone makes a world of difference.

You'll need a M1S 7.62x39 firing pin. $25 shipped. You can then find surplus Yugoslavian ammo for $0.22/rd and shoot cheap and have something that will act as a cheap but lethal round.

The magazines are a little tricky to find at a decent price but you can get them from Aim Surplus for $13 ea plus s/h if you're patient. Anywhere else it's going to be $20 or so.

I know YHM just got into the 7.62x39 upper/rifle market so check them out as well. My LMT upper uses a YHM specter length HG and a Wilson Arms barrel. It runs....

Might be worth your time to look at the FNAR. Mine is sub moa accurate and very reliable.

Olympic Arms also has several uppers and complete AR-15s in .300 Olympic which they claim is based off the .300 WSSM and give ballistics almost identical to the .30-06. Might be something to look at. I don't know much about them, have never shot one but it looks interesting. Only potential pitfall is that the ammo might be expensive and tough to find.

those shortfats look like they would burn out a barrel very quickly.

if your not going to put more than 500 rds down the pipe the olympic would indeed fit the bill though.

If not, 6.5 grendel. (my favorite for long range) 6.8 spc, or 7.62X39 are your best bets.

An FAL is another option to not forget.
