I found that pretty useful when I was starting my research. Only thing it doesn't really go into clearly is that the front sight post, on that system, also functions as the gas block. You'll notice in my build sheet I didn't mention a front sight post and used a low profile gas block. They're interchangeable, and you'll want a low profile gas block if you plan to run a front rail with rail mounted flip up or fixed iron sights. Some folks like the front sight post, I wanted something that might snag less, and looked cooler. I'm not above admitting my vanity.
Biggest difference you might see from that diagram is if you decide you want to go with a free-float rail system like what I'm going to get, the delta ring and the barrel nut are one unit from what I've learned. If I'm wrong hopefully somebody will correct me, because I still haven't gotten a hard answer on that. Someplace I have the link for Brownell's video tutorial for the full assembly of the AR-15. It's pretty small size and when I was watching them it took forever to buffer some of the videos, but it was invaluable insight in knowing how to assemble all the pieces. To touch on what BlackMesa had mentioned about the difference between Milspec and Commercial buffer tubes, that's the biggest difference you'll see, and it relates to stocks. If you want a collapsible stock you have 2 options, Commercial and Milspec. It's not always clear which one you're looking at from some mfg. My advice would be to run a Milspec tube, and only look at buffer tubes/stocks that specify they are/are for Milspec tubes. Last edited by reidic; 10-07-2009 at 11:57 AM. |

Illinois is no suppressors, no short barrelled rifles, no automatic weapons of any kind. Regular 16" barrel ar is fine outside of Chicago.

Not according to federal regulations, the Clinton AWB ended years ago, but you need to make sure your state/city does not have it's own form of restrictions. Since I live in NY I have numerous things I need to comply with for my AR build that you wouldn't have to be concerned about in GA, although I don't know about IL. NY firearm laws are garbage.

Yes. As long as you're sticking with the same chambering you don't have to touch your lower. Some chambers have different parts, for example if you have an upper to convert your rifle to a .22 rimfire or a 9mm. Otherwise you can plug in a 20" rifle length upper then switch to a 14.5-16" carbine system.
