RRA rifle build

So, I just bought a xd 40sc but now am moving on to purchasing a new toy. It was between an 870 and a RRA ar 15. So I picked the AR but now I have some questions because I don't know much about them.

1. I have decided to build my own so that I learn as I go. I am fairly technically capable so I the task doesnt scare me. But, do I just need to buy a complete lower and a complete upper or would it be better to get a stripped lower with a parts kit and the upper?

2. Is there a way to avoid extra expenses like taxes? I think I have read that if you buy seperately then you don't pay tax on it...

3. Do I have to have any of the parts shipped to a ffl dealer? Or since I am ordering parts seperately can they be shipped to me?

Please feel free to mention an good ideas so that I can expedite the process.

3. Only the lower has to be shipped to a FFL unless you buy one local.
2. If you buy the upper seperate from the lower you avoid the excise tax.
1. Complete or stripped and "built" they work out pretty close in the end.

I would build the lower from parts. I enjoy knowing that I put the whole rifle together.

One factor you might want to consider is time. Unless you have a local source or get lucky with an online dealer, finding good parts can be dicey and take a while. A cheap rifle with poor quality parts is no bargain, especially if you have to wait a month or two for an upper with the features you want.

I went through this back in May, and ended up grabbing a complete LMT at the local shop. Apparently, no one wanted to spend the extra bucks to get beyond the Bushies and DPMS sporticals, so they gave me a pretty good deal, and I walked out with a case, ammo, and a GTG rifle.

Just a heads up, RRA uppers are running 7-8 months wait.

I am in month two and it's becoming not worth the wait. Luckily, summer is a busy time so I am distracted.

My LPK from RRA came in about week as did everything else. Just waiting on the upper.

I'm always amused when I see guys' lumping Bushies in with Sporticals. That's rich...really rich. What kind of rifle do you think the Marine Corps rifle team uses??
