I've finally decided to buy an AR. It will be used mostly for plinking and for my nine year old to take a deer with this fall hopefully. I would like to keep it under 1000$ if possible. I will be at a gun show tommorow just to look and maybe pick up a stripped lower. With the prices dropping maybe i should just pick up a complete rifle. It seems like the more i read on this the more i get confused. i just want the best bang for the buck. what do yall think? I want to keep it simple. I was thinking about a cmmg upper and i could build the lower with a ctr stock. Also what twist rate would be best for my needs. Will a 1/9 work good enough for the heavy bullets? I dont post much but I read often and respect you guys opinion. So tell me what you think. thanks in advance
With $1000 you can pick up a nice complete rifle. The past few gun shows that I have been to were a disappointment with the prices being so high. Watch your local gun shops, you never know when they will get something in. I recently picked up a C Daly D-M4 for $950.
Local gun shops have to compete for your repeat business I suppose. But I always find better prices there.
Depending on the weight of the bullets your looking to shoot, the 1/9" barrels may have some trouble. Especially if your going with something HEAVY like the 77gr. stuff.
If your going to be shooting this kind of stuff you may want to get a barrel with a nice wylde chamber and a 1/8" or a 1/7" twist rate.
If you shop around, you should be able to find an upper that will fit the bill for you.

yea, i have about decided to buy a complete gun for my first rifle. i don't have many options locally as far as gun shops so i will probably have to buy online. i found an M&P 15 with the mag-pul stuff for 1350. sounds kind of high, plus its a 1/9. kinda of thinking i should go with a 1/7.
i'm not expecting much from the gun show but figure i might to to go feel a few up anyway will the 1/7 stabilize the light bullets too? I wont be shooting the heavy bullets often.
As mentioned above, if you want to take a deer with a .223, you may want to use a heavier round like a 75 or a 77 grain. For this you'll want to go with the tighter 1/7 twist.
Also check your state regs on deer hunting with .223. It's illegal in some places.
1/7 will stabilize the light bullets just fine as well.
Try finding something with a 1/7 or a 1/8 twist. Both will work well for your needs.

I'd be all over that m&p if it was a 1/7, just might anyway and shoot a lighter bullet like bulltx said. I think the local range will transfer for $10. i figure i could save maybe $100 if i do it myself with what i want. wife keeps telling me to buy a complete gun so she doesn't have to hear me cuss out when something goes wrong.
I'll probably call cdnn a find out what they got. i know i'm making this alot more complicated than it has to be. thanks for the advice and opinions
