Hornady HP/XTP Bullets

I was trying to get some Federal hollowpoints for reloading via mailorder. Everyone seemed to be sold out. Has anyone tried the Hornady HP/XTP 155 grain bullets for the .40S&W?

Ive used the JHP/XTP in 147gr in my 9mm. They shoot great. I was a little disapointed in their expansion after going thru 5in of plywood. But plywood may not be the best thing to get bullets to expand.
I did shoot some tight groups with it though.

That would be becase Federal doesn't make their own bullets for reloading. The Hornady XTP is one of the most accurate bullets I have loaded in any caliber. A bit pricey for practice though.
LT. you can not test expansion in solid matl. Th ebest bet is bal.gel, soaking wet phonebooks or newspaper or just water.

Yep the are designed to punch through barriers such as plywood, glass, heavy clothing sheet metal and then expand in a BG.

I used some 180gr XTPs in .40. Very accurate - but were way spendy regular price at the time. I got them on a 50% off sale when Wally Mart quit selling reloading gear. I now use Zero JHPs for competion.
I usually order from Angus Hobdel at CZ Custom 40 S&W or Powder Valley Powder Valley, Inc. whichever has them in stock. Powder Valley prices do not include shipping but it works out close to the same.

Doh! I know that... Been reloading for years... I meant Speer Gold dot... Had Federal primers dancing around in my head at the time.

Hmm... I just visited a site that showed them with good expansion but little weight loss. Wish I could remember the guys site address... He must be retired, it was amazing how much test data he had compiled.
