a hd round (jhp) is lighter (gr) than a range round (fmj) because the jhp has a giant hole in the end. That seemed easy enough.

fyi, you can buy 40 S&W FMJ in 165 & 180gr and JHP's in the same weights the "hole" has nothing really to do with weight, its bullet design that makes a difference

I totally agree a heavy bullet can perform bad, and a light bullet can perform bad ... Do a little research and stick with the better known name brand ammo for SD and make sure your gun feeds it properly.

There's a lot of sales hype out about the favorite mystery bullet of the week ... The ones Rampant Colt listed are all proven performers. But I'd still do your own check or find a magazine that compares your bullet of choice in the weight you want to shoot ... One brand of 165gr might be great while the same brand of 180gr might be a compromise.

Myself, I just stay with names like those listed and don't worry about it.

The only exception is my 380 ... Corbon made the DPX just for the 3" barreled pocket guns, no one else that I know of has done that.

Just about every bullet wt. is available as a FMJ or a JHP. The wt. of the bullet has little to do w/ it being for range or SD/HD except that all the cheaper range/practice ammo IS FMJ.
