First reloads fired! Lots of smoke??
Question for the gurus! I made and fired my first reloads today
40s&w 170gr cast lead
batch #1 4gr win 231 fed sm primers
batch #2 4.6gr win 231
batch #3 5.2gr win 231
Accuracy was best with batch 1 and batch 3. All of them had a lot of smoke after each shot. Is this normal with this powder? Is it the lead bullets?? I never had that much smoke with factory loads. I felt like I was shooting a muzzle loader!!
the primers look ok, I didn't see anything indicating high pressures. There is a small mark on the side of the primer indentation from the firing pin, but I looked at my factory fired rounds and they have the same mark. (is this normal to have a not perfectly round indentation on the primer??)
is it the powder or have i done something wrong with my loads???
any insight would be great!!
thanks!

Lead always has lots of smoke. It also depends on the lead type, hardness, and sizing. If the lead is just a bit small then it will have gas blow-by causing lots of smoke.

231 does have a little smoke but the most probably culprit is the lube being used.

Oh yeah!! Is there a bullet lube?
Also 40SW has a higher pressure curve and the higher the pressure the more the smoke using lead bullets.

Lead cast bullet + Win 231 = Smoke cloud... When shooting my .45 with jacketed bullets I didn't notice it as bad but when I switched to lead cast it was very apparent. Good luck with the rest of your reloads..

Thanks guys, are there powders that are less smoky?? not that it really bothers me that much.
lubricant? yes. just from whereever they were casted. there's a band of purple waxy substance around the bullet. don't know what it is.
I was shooting cups out to 40 yards with these reloads! accurate for sure.

I use Unique with cast .41s. It is smoky, but it is undoubtedly the lube not the powder.Try the same powder with a jacketed bullet. I think you'll see it's not the powder.

Also according to my reloading manuals and the Hodgdon Website, 231 is not mentioned for the 170gr lead bullets. That usually means it is not recommended.

I used to use lead uncoated due to them being cheap but could no see due to smoke so I "bit the bullet" and spent the extra for FMJ copper coated and am very pleased
look at Precision Delta 9.8 @
