45 ACP brass question
OK, so I'm getting into reloading 45 ACP for the first time. My dad's been reloading rifle ammo for years, and I'm going to be using his Dillon Super 1050. I've been buying a box or 2 of whatever training ammo is available at my local range, usually Speer Lawman or Federal American Eagle. Tonight as I was going through all of my spent brass from range trips, I noticed that the primers and the primer pockets on the Speer brass are considerably smaller than all of the other brass that I have, i.e. Remington UMC, WWB, Federal, CCI Blazer Brass, etc. Like I said earlier, I'm pretty new at this, but am learning quickly. I'm assuming that I'm going to have separate the Speer brass from the rest and use different primers on them? Also, after a few batches through the tumbler for polishing, I've noticed that the Speer brass is much cleaner inside the casing compared to all of the other brass. Does Speer use some particularly clean-burning powder? Just an observation, really; I guess it won't really affect the results of reloading. Thanks for any clarification.

SOme Speer & Winchester ammo use a small primer. The 45acp typically uses a large primer, so yes you'll have to sort. FWIW, changing primer assem. on a 1050 wouldn't make it worth while to save it IMO. I would trade off the SP brass & stick w/ the LP stuff. Your brass doesn't have to be clean inside, infact, once you start reloading it, it won't be unless you use some kind of liquid cleaner.

Hey, thanks for the info. I figured about the same. I'll just end up tossing the Speer brass...only have 50 or so of the Speer casings anyway. Didn't seem worth the effort or time to keep 2 different primers around and change the setup.
