SHTF ammo interchangability.

OK, here's the scenario:

It's day 247 of the zombie apocalypse. Your supplies of 9mm, 5.56 and 7.62x39 are running dangerously low. You are equipped with the following:

AK-47 in 7.62
Springfield XD in 9mm
and an AR-15 in 5.56

in a pinch, what alternate rounds might work in these weapons? I've been told that .223 can work in most 5.56 chambered weapons, but what about other 7.62x?? rounds? I'm thinking specifically of .30 carbine which I believe is 7.62x33.

Would a 7.62x51NATO round work in a 7.62x54R mosin-nagant or SVD? What about the 9x18Makarov round in a 9x19?

I'm not talking about an ideal situation... this is pure SHTF speculation.

What other rounds might be interchangeable in a zombie-apocalypse pinch? Feedability is not a factor. You can slide them into the chamber one at a time for all I care. I just want to know what might go "boom" when I pull the trigger.

Not shure on that. for zombie invasion just give me a crapload of 12 ga ammo and a flame thrower.

5.56 and .223 are the same. 9mm Mac. uses a slightly larger diameter bullet so it probably won't chamber or be safe to fire. 7.62X51 won't work in either the M-N or the 7.62X39. YOU"RE S.O.L MAN!

Heres some info I just found.
Cartridge interchangeability chart (Randy Lyman)

Calibers and Cartridges

If all else fails you could always revert to the Cricket Bat and shovel.

Not quite the same. 5.56 has slightly higher pressure specs and longer bullet leade in the chamber.

But you can fire .223 in a 5.56, not recommended the other way around.

.22 would shoot out of your AR providing you find a .22 conversion kit laying around some place lol.

not on your list but you can shoot 38 special in a 357 gun.

I've seen people shoot .22lr in 22magnum guns, single shot only, they won't feed.

My suggestion stock up on as much as you can afford, I've currently got 12,000 rounds in my basement and have no intentions to stop buying anytime soon.

I am curious to see if what other people come up with though.

Read the ^ articles from other posters; they are a descent read.

Pretty much a lot of what you could think of has been said or mentioned. But the truth is if you run out of ammo after a year, dang it you did not buy enough. I am paranoid of running out of ammo if shtf. There is probably around 20,000 of handgun ammo in the back room and about 18,000 rounds of rifle ammo in the back. I am not exaggerating on my numbers. I don't have an AR or AK yet. When i do i will definitely bulk up on ammo. Every time i go to the hunting camp i take some extra ammo to store with me. And if i start to worry there is the reloading station and the piles of reloading supplies i have for it. Maybe I'm crazy but i really enjoy shooting at the range and the hunting camp.

Yes , I read that in" guns and ammo" . However , not everyone agrees with that. The 5.56 in a .223 is about like shooting a 9mm NATO in your 9mm (proportionally the difference in pressure is probably less). In any case , the dimensions are the same and many , many people have interchanged the two with no problems. If you know of someone who has damaged a .223 by shooting surplus 5.56 I would be interested to hear the story.
