Hey, it's not my gun.

I live in Florida and I want to sell a handgun to my friend. That is simple enough, but how do I get it registered in his name? Actually, I don't care so much about that----how do I make it NOT registered in my name. I thought I would just have him sign a paper and then I would just hang on to that for the rest of my life. Is there a better way??

have to go to a gun dealer. then its basically filling out all the paperwork like he is buying it from the store. he will have to pass the background check and all.

In a nutshell, there's your answer. Most gun stores will charge $20-$30 to transfer, plus the background check fee.

florida doesnt have firearms registration. you dont have to do anything, but if you want to be on the safe side go to a dealer and have him do a NICS call in.

O.K., thanks for the help. I'm not really sure yet if that is what I will do (though I suppose I should) it cuts into my profit margin 20-30 bucks. Thanks for the info.

Make him pay the fee. Besides, if a crime is ever committed with that gun, you'll be glad you went through the hoops.

you dont even have to do a xfer you can have them do a 10$ nics call in to make sure he isnt a felon. lol really as long he is 21

State law specificialy states that gun registration is unlawful. the paper work you filled out stays with the FFL till he closes up shop perment then im not real sure what happens after that.

if anything was to happen in the future they "could" possibly trace the gun back to you. show them a bill of sale and you are cleared.

personally if i sold a firearm to a friend or someone i knew i dont even think i would use a bill of sale as long as he was not a felon. the anti's call this the Gun Show Loop Hole......

Check state laws. Here in Tx. I can sell any firearm short of a full-auto/sbr/aow as long as I believe the man not to be a felon or crazy and as long as they are over 18 no NICS checks needed.

I would suggest at the very least a bill of sale.

I wouldn't be worried about the friend that I sold it to... its three owners later when your personal judgement doesn't allow you to decide who's hands it gets into that I would be concerned about. (the friend of a friend's next door neighbor's coworker that is three or four owners removed from you.

I suppose keeping accurate records of any transaction is key either way you do it. I guess if it really was several owners down the line, there would be enough paper trail between everyone to support the fact that it isn't yours anymore.
