.380 Ka-Boom!

I think this die-hard reloader(35 years experience) has learned a lesson and will be much more conservative
when reloading rounds that will be used in a firearm with a partially unsupported chamber. A lot of auto loaders do this to a small degree but NONE I've seen do it to this extreme (even Glock). I think this pistol and the P3AT get away with this because the .380 auto round is relatively low pressure and it appears not a lot of people are reloading for this gun. I have yet to see anyone say "Hey - I reload for this pistol all the time at the levels listed in the Lyman manual and all is OK".

Ruger LCP - KaBoom

This motivated me to breakdown my XD9 and insert a cartridge to see how much was unsupported. It also is an example of why the first place to look for an "overload/overpressure" would be the lower end (non-supported portion) of the brass, not the primer. This incident also makes for a good reason to clean and pre-inspect your "once-fired" brass.

Wow. Though for a .380 that bullet seems way heavy AND way to fast. That's got to be a crazy amount of pressure for a .380 chamber.

I hope it wasn't because he had a bad batch of powder. Alliant had a recall on Unique a while back and the kegs contained Bullseye powder instead. I know it's an older recall but you never know.

I'm still in the process of getting acquainted with the reloading process ... But it seems that with a small case size like the 380 ... It's a pretty risky reload.

Besided, how much are you gonna shoot an LCP/P3-AT ... Buy it ... I view 380 ammo as an expensive 22. But I am saving the brass

**** that stuff costs more than 9mm and WAY less than .22.

I've got all of my .380 brass saved up but haven't bought dies or anything for it yet because it's not a round I shoot often.

edubya,
Just out of curiosity how did the XD9 look on teardown with a 9mm bullet in the barrel? I was under the impression that the bullet was fully supported in the XD.

Ehh ... I'm ignoring cost as it does cost a lot .... Like you said I don't shoot it much. But from a reloading view it's about like trying to reload a 22 ... when you factor in the small error KABOOM factor ... Ehh, I'm saving brass, but have no intention to reload any at this time.

That's what I meant ... As long as I don't shoot it much ... I'll overlook the cost and just buy 380. It's not worth the hassle.

Only about 4mm are exposed (unsupported), half of that is the base of the cartridge.
