XD-9 Sub-Compact Any ammo to stay away from?
I'm a bit ignorant when it comes to guns. I recently ordered an XD-9 SC and I was wondering if there is any ammo I should stay away from due to the shorter barrel? I read some stuff about expansion, velocity, etc but it kind of confused me.

There are a TON of good ammo choices for the XD-9 SC. Are you looking for a practice/target round, or something for self defense? For practice I recommend WWB or CCI Blazer Brass. For self defense I use Speer Gold Dots 124g +P GDHP.
Seriously?! WWB is a standard practice round for TONS of shooters. It is a bit dirty, but it is consistent and accurate enough for practice with XDs, including my two XD-9s. I would shoot WWB FMJ for self defense obviously, but for the range it is great.

My XD 9 Sub has shot everything I have feed it. For target / practice ammo I would buy what ever is cheapest in your area and don't worry about expansion, velocity & penetration for practice or target shooting. I typically shoot Winchester Whitebox purchased at Wal-Mart or Mag-Tec at the local gun store. I've never had a problem with either brands.
For carrying and personal protection you should be concerned about expansion, velocity and penetration. I use two types of ammo for personal protection Speer Gold Dots in 124 gr and Federal HST 124 +P and 147 gr. Several good threads on self defense and personal protection in the ammo section on the forum.

I use magtech 115gr FMJ or UMC 115gr FMC for practice and have never had an issue. I use Magtech First Defense SCHP for SD. I know it's a lighter round but with a short 3" barrel the extra fps ensures that it will expand and penatrate which heavier bullets have a problem doing out of a short barrel because they are to slow.

It's all I use for range ammo... I'd say stay away from any steel cased ammo (namely Wolf) unless you're getting a really good deal on it. CCI Blazer is also good (and cheap), but you can't reload it if you're into that.

Thanks
Great info. Based on a lot of other posts I've read I do plan to go with Speer Gold Dot for a self-defense load (if I can find it up here in AK).

As for reloading, I don't do it now but I might in the future. I guess I should just save all the brass in case I do.
