i've always heard that the .50AE was designed/used to stop vehicles (i.e. killing the engine).

dont know how true it is, but i know it will hurt an engine so its plausable.

I thought the .50 AE was designed to stop suicide bomber before they could detonate. Thus the Anti Extremist name.

S&W 460 has equal energy at 300yards as 44mag at muzzle. Why stop a car? Just get out of the way.

The thought behind this question was really for a self-defense situation, where let's say some crazed drug addict is trying to run you over. Many have said, step aside. OK. And then when he turns around for another run? Step aside again? OK. And if I ran away, they'd catch up to me, only to step aside again. So we keep doing this bull/matador routine until I die tired. No, I was wanting to know if I could disable the vehicle so I could avoid having to shoot the driver.

I think the ballistics discussion is cool though. I do not expect a .40S&W bullet to equal the mass of a moving vehicle and freeze its motion. I think I'll just go after the driver! Then I'll go for a joyride in the car. That sounds ideal.
