I was using cheap Remington JHP's from Wal-Mart but at the last gunshow I picked up a box of Magtech Guardian Gold (40 cal for my Sig) without doing any research. They were almost a buck a piece which I thought was a bit pricey. From what I can tell there isn't a clear winner (probably a toss up between Gold Dot and Hydrashock) on this subject so I assume any brand name defensive JHP will be adequate. I really need to pick up some 9mm for my XD since its currently loaded with WWB.

Another question I have is how long can you keep the ammo? Could I buy a box of the expensive stuff and keep it loaded in the gun indefinitely?

Hornady TAP FPD, 200gr +p in my xd45. It feeds fine, recoil is manageable and it uses low flash powder so you don't get as blinded by muzzle flash at night.

XD(M) .40=Hornady TAP
1911 .45=Hornady TAP
XD .45=Federal Hydra-Shox
Colt Trooper MK3 .357=Georgia Arms Deer Stoppers
Remington 870=TAP 00 Buck-Remington Managed recoil slugs
AR=Federal tatical .223

Corrosion caused by moisture is what's not good for ammo. If stored in a dry place or in sealed in airtight containers, it will keep indefinitely. The spring on your magazine will go bad if you keep it loaded before the ammo most likely.

Hydra-shock for my XD-40 and Pow R Ball for my 9mm.
