Sorry for the newb question but Is number 4 shot the same as #4 Buck shot I have both and the powder charge and dram eq appear to be the same. Just wondering because I want use it for home defense and walmart has #4 shot on clearance so if it is the same I want to stock up.
Thanks

NO #4 bird shot is a tad smaller than BB by almost 1/2 and #4 Buckshot is I believe 27 cal. or maybe .22 cal I dont have my chart in front of me but I know I'm awfull close.

Edit: want a good example shoot at a piece of cardboard at 40 feet or so and it will be plain to see.

Thanks for the info guys. Do you know of any good places to get Info on different loads because it is pretty confusing, I was at sportsmans warehouse last week and I thought my head was going to explode there were like 500 different loads to pick from and no explanations.

anything that says buckshot is great for home defense in my opinion. but then again if i was a robber i wouldnt care if it was bird turkey or buck comin at me. bird shot will either kill them incapacitate them or have them running...with buck shot you'll prolly just kill him...or her.

I use 000 Buck 2 3/4 in my Mossberg 590.

I have read many many articles about all of the different rounds for defense and they almost always say that a good ole' fashioned 00 or 000 Buck shot is extremely effective.

Actually, #4 birdshot is alot smaller than BB, good for rabbits & pheasant but a poor HD choice. Anything 2 3/4" shell loaded w/ buckshot is fine. I perfer #4Buckshot for HD, backed up by #00. The low recoil #00 buck has alot going for it in less recoil w/ faster follow up shots & better patterns. The whole shot sizing is abit confusing; with birdshot the larger number is smaller & w/ buckshot, the smaller number is bigger. Wilson Precision Products - Shotgun Pellet Size Chart
