180Gr. Too Light???
I need some input on bullet weight. My son has a 45 acp and was told nothing under 200 Gr. I'm going to start casting bullets for him but don't want to waste t&m on the wrong weight.
He only shoots paper with his gun now so give me some guidance on this subject. bowdoctor53 |

Do you know WHY they told him nothing less than 200 gr?...possibly a 'break in' period or something?

I agree that it sounds like a "break in" weight. But keep in mind that a lot of people tell you not to fire lead in them either
185, 200g's always shoot well. However, there is nothing wrong with casting him some 230g bullets either. Hell, anyone who would cast me some bullets would get a "thank you" no matter what their weight.

I've been shooting .45acp for about 25 years...I've always shot either 185, or 200gr cast bullets either one is a excellant choice. My XD however, has shown that it prferrs a 230gr bullet weight So, I'm going with that, They'll work well in my 1911's as well.

Greetings- Tactikel
Hello all!
I have an XD-45 and really love it! Have owned: 1911 ,HI-Power, Combat Commander,- XD is BEST. RE: 180 gr loads - 180 gr loads have been shot millions of times over the years (SWC)- the XD likes round nose slugs best -I have found SWC and flat nosed and JHP tend to hang up (maybe 1 in 100). Round nose slugs NEVER fail to feed! Try a box or 2 of SWC if they feed- go for it !! Last edited by tactikel : 05-07-2008 at 06:36 PM. Reason: completeness |

That advise makes no sense to me.
If you are loading for a XD you will be much better off using round nose profile also.

That doesn't make any sense to me either. Some people just give really ignorant advice.

I have shot as light as 155gr but prefer 180 -200 LRN for reloading, with the 155 there is just not enough bullet in the case to suit me.

The lighter the bullet the cheaper they are. The gold std. for accuracy in the 45acp has always been the 200grSWC. Nothing wrong w/ the 185gr either. Infact, my ccw load is the 185grRemGS in my Om. It makes 900fps+ from the short bbl. & expands & penetrates well.
