Question 9mm Round Choice

I'm going to be picking up my XD SC in 9mm Friday (!) and I'm thinking about what rounds I need to put in it for protection. I'll be using a different round for practice on the range, but I'd like to find a round that has good stopping power but may have less tendency to over-penetrate, or break out the back of the target in the event of a self-defense scenario.

Does anyone have any thoughts on personal protection rounds in 9mm that aren't wall penetrating?

These may be very noob questions, but...I'm just askin' .

I also carry a sub-compact XD9 for personal protection and use the Federal Premium Law Enforcement ammo. I use the tactical 124-grain hydra-shok JHPs. I haven't had any issues on the range with this ammo and feel comfortable carrying it for self-defense.

I use the Federal HST's in 124gr for my Taurus. Sho looks nasty when it opens up.

CorBon DPX is a great choice, it will always expand. If you're just terrified of penetration, you can go with a name brand frangible (any bullet is better than no bullet)

I'll throw in a little "low-budget" advice here.

I carry in my first magazine Winchester 147 gr. JHP "Personal Defense" rounds. I like the way they penetrate and the way they expand. They're much cheaper (IIRC) than either Federal or Speer. That said, my second mag is Federal Law Enforcement 115 gr. JHPs. I haven't practiced with but 1 magazine of these rounds (considerably more spendy on my tight budget). The first mag was flawless, so I stuck with 'em.

My low-budget $.02

JHP is illegal for carry in NJ... well so it carry, but I've heard great things about Hornady TAP.

The 9mm round has come a long way in terms of balistics then it did 10 or 15 years ago and most of it is due to new bullet designs. I would stick with a 147 or 124 gr modern JHP. For short barrel consider getting +P ammo just remember it will have more recoil. Shooting +P out of my Kahr PM9 is a handful so I backed down to a standard round.

I currently carry Speer Gold Dots 124 gr in the XD 9mm SC and Kahr PM 9. I'm looking at Federal HST's 147 gr but the reality is any of the major name brand ammo will work. Winchester, Speer, Federal, Remm ect.... will be a good round. I've carried +P ammo for the shorter barrels the 124 gr is the most common for +P ammo. I've had a hard time finding 147gr +P. I bought several boxes of Winchester SXT's in 147 gr +P's and they sit in the ammo can.

Here is a good site to check out on Federal HST ammo testing. I'm hoping to order a few boxes next week to do some testing myself. Two friends just got CCW's permits so we are going to shoot some phone books and jugs with a wide array of HP's to see what they like and build some confidence in the ammo.

Make sure what ever round you buy you shoot several through your firearm so you know it goes bang every time you pull the trigger.

Round 6 - Federal HST 9mm vs 45 acp
Round 3 - 9mm JHP's through Tshirts
