Reloading

Hey guys would anyone here say that reloading is unsafe? I currently own a XD45 and have a XD9 on the way and I brought up reloading to a buddy of mine and he said it was unsafe and he would never reload. This is coming from a guy who doesn't own a gun and doesn't know how much it costs for ammo these days. He tells me to just go buy a .22! Does my buddy talking out of his butt about reloading being unsafe?

This pretty much says it all.

I have been reloading for 25 years with no problems. As long as you adhere to good safety practices and published loading data it is completely safe.

I agree with above posts... it is like driving your car... turn the radio up, talk on the cell phone, eat a hamburger and look for the fry that hit the floorboard while doing 90mph..... how safe is that?

Reloading is chemistry... pay attention and all is well... get complacent and it could hurt you.. maybe not now but when you get to the range.

reloading is perfectly sufe...sife....sofe...uh, safe. Yeah, that's it. The lead really doesn't affect you.

j/k - I've had no problems reloading or with the reloads. No accidents at all. I take precautions when tumbling brass to do it outside to avoid lead dust. And I wear latex gloves when handling spent primers. All bullets that I use a copper jacketed or plated.

Reloading is like many other things; what you get out of it depends a lot on what you put into it. Go at it half hearted and carefree . . . you know, garbage in garbage out. Be safe and conscientious in your efforts and it can be a very rewarding and economical endeavor. Probably won't save you any real money, but you'll sure be able to shoot more and shoot exactly what you want!

No offense, but your buddy shouldn't offer an opinion w/o some knowledge. Reloading or handloading is perfectly safe as long as you follow the rules & supplied data & pay attention to what you are doing. Kind of like using power tools or driving a car. I'll bet your buddy uses a cell phone while he drives too.
I've been handloading for 30yrs now & load for several calibers that have no data available. I'm stil here & have all my fingers & both eyes so I must be doing something right.

I think what your friend heard but wrongly conveyed to you is "buying reloaded ammo is unsafe". If you load the ammo yourself, then there is no fear.

Reason some "factory" reloaded ammo is unsafe is because for the most part, these guys are cranking out ammo in volume, so they tend not to verify and check measurements every so ofter, they might have accidently double charged, or loaded a bullet on a case with a broken neck.

Attention to detail, that's what matters. Not following published data can lead to problems and in my mind, the capability of doubbling charges in a round like the 9mm or 45 ACP with fast burning powders that fill 1/3 of the case is the biggest concern. If you pay attention and do not get distracted, it is safe and you will find it enjoyable as well.
