3" barrell ammo

I've read that certain ammo is better for the sub compacts. True? If so what do you guys carry or recommend? Specifically in 9mm.

Lighter weight ammo....that allows it to get faster velocity to ensure proper expansion (hollow points anyway).

for example...in a compact 1911 use 185gr. HP instead of 230gr.

in the 9mm you usually carry what? 115gr. HP would be fine, as opposed to a heavier bullet. the 9mm goes so fast anyway i dont think its an issue.

The sub compacts are one reason to move to a +p loading, so you get back the 75fps or so you lose in the shorter bbl. You can also drop to a light er bullet wt. if recoil is an issue, but a 124gr+p like the Speer GD or Rem GS would be my choice.

With modern premium jhp ammo the old you need light weigh or +P for short barrel guns is out the window.

Try a few rounds from 115 to 147 and see what works for you. You may even try some +P for the fun of it.

You might want to check out the DPX line from Corbon. There's a good article on loads for mini 9's by Chuck Taylor in the June issue of Combat Handguns.

Speer makes Short Barreled HPs that are designed to expand well out of the SC barrels. They gave the hollow point a larger opening to promote expansion at lower velocities.

Myself I carry Speer Gold Dot 124grn +p HPs. Not the short barrel versions though and I carry them in a XD9SC.

Here's a pic of a round I recently fired into water jugs.

9mm on the left 200 grn +p .45 Fed. EFMJ on the right. 124grn +p which came right out of my carry mag.

This is how many water jugs it traveled though left to right stopping in the last bottle.

Another vote for Speer Gold Dots in a +P variety. They perform very well out of my XD9SC.
