Winchester or CCI
Just wondering if there was a difference in these two primers in small pistol. new to reloading and have been using win. primers, but I got several hundred CCI primers at a good price. What kind of difference will I see (if any)?

VIrtually none. You can straight substitute unless your load is already max. Then I would back off 0.2gr (fast power) or 0.1gr (med. powder) & work back up. I don;t play much w/ uberfast powders & most often I am off max. so I freely substitute all brands.

I have found the CCI primers difficult to ignite in my S&W 38 revolver I use in PPC. When I switched to Winchester, never a failure to fire. Also found similar results in my Sig232. Had many failure to fires until i went back to Winchester. They worked great in my 1911 and little colt pocketlite. Go figure, but I now only use Winchester for all pistols.

I'm told that CCI primers are a little harder than Winchester...but still fine in a stock gun.

I'm a Speer fanboy so my opinion would be biased.

I agree completely. Performance wise, not a lot of difference. But CCI primers are a bit harder and a light striking gun might not do as well with them . I had that experience with a .380 once. But it fired winchesters every time.

Wolf is a nice inexpensive primer that is soft. CCI 400 small rifle primer works great too. I use that exclusively now, but when I run out I plan to buy some Wolf. Gonna take me awhile though as I still have 4800 left out of 5000.

Has anyone tried Magtech primers? Saw them at Sportsmans for about $4 cheaper (per 1K) than CCI and Winchester. I may try them after I use the rest of my CCI's.

primers
I never tried Wolf, Fed number one for Rev/Autos. Win good for
autos. CCI used to be very hard. I loaded about 500 rnds of 40 with CCI last year and worked ok. |
