interesting show on ammo today
I was watching the history channel and the show was about ammo. They said that most police forces and the marines have switched to "frangible" ammo? Anyone else see this or heard about it? Everything that I have read says frangible while good in concept, lacks serious penetration. Anyone else have comments?

They said it was a mixture of metals, a Proprietary blend. So they would not divulge its make up. One segment showed a police officer 3 feet from a metal plate unload his magazine and you could see the pieces fly. This could not or should not be done with conventional ammo.

RBCD is that similar?
RBCD - Google Video= I purchased some of this for trial, Waiting on some ballistic gel. I am going to compare with some other types. The reason I got these is for in home invasion. Suppose I had to shoot towards kids room these are not suppose to penatrate drywall, but explode on flesh or liquid. ? I posted this in the ammo area and was told they are fake.

We're still using M855. I've heard that our guys at the front are using the 70something grn Serria match kings and have taken to dissassembling SAW belts for the black tipped armor piercing stuff. But I have yet to see any frangible stuff getting issued out.

frangible ammo takes full advantage of E=MC^2. they fire a lighter projectile are almost twice the speed of regular ammo. increasing the projectiles speeds greatly increases its kinetic energy far greater than increasing the mass of the projectile. the idea is to dissipate the energy fully into the target without over penetration. the argument that they do not have enough penetration is skeptical at best unless you are firing at some type of armor, but even then, it depends on what you are trying to get through. for example, RBCD will blast clean through the door of a vehicle, but will not make it through 3 sheets of sheet rock.
RBCD very well may be the most advanced ammo available at the moment, however lack of trials or the test of time has plagued it. i have personaly seen what RBCD does to flesh (fired into a pig carcass ) compared to hyra-shock, the effect is absolutely devastating!! |

War is a perfect excuse for us to dispose of a couple hundred tons of depleted uranium on foreign soil.. I don't think we'll truly be 'going green' for awhile.

Its not E=MC^2 (nuclear power where c=speed of light). Ammo works in kinimatics so it would work within the context of F=ma. The bottom line with any ammo is going to work by the weight of the projectile * the speed. Now when it contacts a target the efficieny of the energy transfer is going to be very complex. Density of target, density of projectile, surface area of projectile, etc. Now, I am all ears for a better SD round, butI would look at ballistics performance before "going green." |

I think the "green" part of the ammo is just a good P.R. sidefect of moving away from lead bullets. I don't think that the army is too woried about being green (well other than the cammo) since they are using uranium tipped warheads.
