personal protection .357mag ammo

I am thinking about buying a used Ruger sp101 with 2.25in barrel. At first I was thinking of using 38's in it for protection but want to check out some good hollow points in 357 mag. What do you recommend?

I use 158 GR. Federal Hydra-shok's in mine. I've got a 2.25" barrel but it's ported. The kick's very manageable.

I've got Speer GD's 158's, Federal Hydra's and some misc HP's. Speer GD's are in the speed loaders. The XD is my primary HD firearm. My 357 is a S&W 686 w/ 6" so it only goes camping and hunting w/ me.

Also, is there a certain bullet weight that would be best for the short barrel?

The Speer 135grGDSB makes 1175fps from my SP101, very mild recoil. The 145gr WWSTHP is also a good choice. I actually like the 158grLSWCHP+P 38sp. It shoots close to POA (the 135gr are way low) & recoil is very mild, pretty easy to get quick multiple hits w/. The bullet penetrates well & expands to 57cal. It is also an easy load to duplicate for pratice w/ cast lead 158grSWC.

I have 158 GR Hydroshocks in mine too. In a short barreled gun like the SP, the 158gr seems to be milder to me, but the Sp-101 will handle whatever you throw at it pretty darned well.

Thanks to all who have responded so far. Everyone seems to like hydrashocks. Havent tried them yet in my .45 either. Looks like a few like the 158gr, which I guess is the big question I had for a small revolver like the sp 101.

Didn't they quit making them about 10 years ago? I have 1 box left that I bought in about 1994. I do not think the make the replacement SXT or the Ranger T in .357Mag unfortunatly. I use the Ranger T's in my XD's

Back to the original question, I use Speer Gold Dot SB in my J-Frame.

Forget HydraShoks... yesterday's technology. Try 125 gr. Corbon DPX You will get much better performance.
