Oh Oh!!!
I loaded 300 rounds of 45ACP Saturday - 5.1gr of 231 behind a 230gr Winchester FMJ. Thinking about it, I realized I may have accidentally double charged one round!
I'm using a Forster bullet puller, & found a trick that may help others. The bullets were sticking in the collet, so I removed it & carefully spread the fingers of the collet further apart by tapping a small screwdriver into the slits between the collet fingers. now, it works great - no marks on the bullets at all, so it looks like I can reuse them. Anyway, even if I toss the bullets, it's cheaper than replacing my XD, or my head. Heads are REALLY expensive & hard to find. |

Did you try weighing the loaded cartridge, looking for one that was 5 grains over the average weight? Finding one or more that way.....I would pull it (them) first.

Yes, having a good scale is a good way to verify if you've overcharged any rounds. A 5gr difference should be noticable unless you had a way underweight bullet and a way underweight case.

I had some "iffy" rounds myself; bought a digital scale to check them all; never regretted buying it!

lol....i was gonna suggest the scale but it looks like everyone already has. It happens...
Thats why i like Red Dot powder, its visually obvious if you double charge...i also use a turret press so i do all the powder drops then bullets all at once.

I tried the scale, but here's more variation in case weights than I thought there was - I loaded mixed cases. Maybe I'll pick up an inexpensive digital scale for things like this - it'll be quicker than my 1010 balance scale.

Just finished pulling the bullets on the rest of the 300 rounds - didn't find any double charged. Better safe than sorry. Now I can have fun loading them again.

I bet you give them all one last look before you seat the bullets next time!
