The Xd will shoot just about anything. I dont know what caliber your talking about but for target I usually use Blazer Brass from wal mart. Its cheap and reliable. I also like magtech and once in a while use winchester or remington.

Only ask because I hear people say some automatics prefer certain ammo, and my Beretta seems to fall in that class...so I was just wondering if XDs were the same way, or if they would shoot just about anything fine.

Dont worry, the XD is very reliable. Try anything you want. I tend to stay away from anything not made from real brass casings, such as wolf. Others use it and it shoots fine for them. Try different types of ammo and see what you like. I think you will see that the XD is very reliable. Thats one of the main reasons we all like it.

Ammo
I do quite a bit of ammunition testing. In my XD I use several different types. For warmer climates Speer Gold Dot ammunition is outstanding because of its rapid opening and expansion/retention characteristics. I prefer to use Hornaday TAP rounds. They might not be molecularly bonded or even bonded to their jacket the way that Speer is. However, it maintains a lot of mass and has outstanding penetration, expansion/retention characteristics. If you wanted a Personal Defense round thats extremely effective and probably the most accurate, I'd choose the Remington Golden Saber. Either way, these are just a few ideas. Like I said, I've tested about 40 different types from various manufacturers in almost ALL available pistol cartridges.

This is probably a better question for the ammo section. Most people new to firearms ask something similar. A lot of good information in the ammo section and on the net on this topic.
You have a lot of ammo to choose from especially for the 9MM. I shoot Speer GD's and Federal in my 9's. The XD SC & Kahr PM 9 gets Speer GD's 9mm 124Gr +P they have short barrels so I loose some velocity and need to make it back up with the +P. The Beretta is Federal 147 Gr and some 115 Gr mix of HP's I'll have to look. 9MM and defense I would stay with a 124 gr or heavier round in a 4" firearm. You can't go wrong with one of the major vendors (Federal, Remmington, Hornady, Speer, Winchester and I'm missing a bunch) the key is to buy a few boxes and put some rounds down range. Bullets do perform differently so do as much testing as you can. It's expensive to do it but you need to make sure it feeds, fires and ejects. It builds confidence in yourself, the firearm and ammo. Make sure to run the ammo through different mags so you know everything is good to go. I would stay away from the speciality ammo until it's proven.
