Expanded Golden Sabers

Whats up guys/gals. Figured you would like to check these out so here they are. I was shootin in the back yard over the weekend and figured I would try to "capture" some Golden Sabers in water jugs. I had them in 9mm, .357 mag, .40 and .45. Guns used were:

Taurus 92AF - 9mm
Colt Python - .357mag
XD40 Service - .40
Springfield Loaded - .45

This was totally unscientific. The 9mm jacket kept separating. I did it 3x and it happened every time. The other calibers stayed together fine.

Here they are. From left to right: 9mm -> .357 -> .40 -> .45

Yeah. The 45 is nice and beefy. I thought the .357 was going to rip apart but it didnt. I think Im going to weigh them and see how they compare to their original weight.

OK. I weighed them out. I have a digital scale that weighs grains. Like I said this is just me and totally unscientific so ymmv. I weighed each one 3x to see if the scale reported different weights but it didnt.

I got a .45 and .40 fmj that I found in my yard in almost perfect shape. Both CCI Blazer Brass. Figured I would weigh them as well.

.45 FMJ 230grain - scale weighed at 229.9
.40 FMJ 180grain - scale weighed at 180.0

Now the Golden Sabers:

9mm 124grain - scale weighed 123.5
.357 125grain - scale weighed 125.0
.40 180grain - scale weighed 177.5
.45 230grain - scale weighed 229.9

Not bad weight retention assuming the scale is halfway decent.

I didnt think about it at the time cause I kinda did this last minute with no planning but I should have laid a tape measurer next to the jugs to get an idea on how far each one penetrated. Oh well. Maybe next time.

I'd prefer a hollowpoint that makes sharp edges on the lead part as it expands, gives the weedeater effect. I tested some TAPS in .40 and they seperated from the jacket on 2, and didn't expand well on the 3rd. The gold dot 9mm's +p I was very pleased with, though penetration through thick bone slowed em down to only going in 3.5 inches. In soft flesh it went through alot and expanded nicely. Putting a live fox down with one made a big exit hole. I haven't tested the gold dot .40's yet.

How far do they go into a milk jug filled with water? What distance are you shooting into them from? Do the slugs drop down inside the jug? I may like to try this method too, since deer necks and piles of dead foxes are not so easy to get this time of year.

I was tempted to shoot a rat the other night with the XD9, but those gold dots cost 1.00 each, would go right through a rat and into chicken coop wood and to who knows where, and both the chickens and I would have hearing problems LOL. Yeah I was wandering around at night with the shoulder rig and XD9 on me...

a while ago a friend of mine made some "balistics" gell by using 1 gallon of water, and 1lb of nox gelatin.

mix the gelatin with water, set in fridge for 2 hours, then put in pan and put over medium heat and stir until it has "melted" ( you will notice a difference in texture) then pour into mold and place in fridge over night.

my buddy made a 5x5x12" block out of this mix and it cought m 380 hollow points, but my 40s went threw it, but if it were longer it would catch almost anything...

it was fun to play with/see how devistating the path from my .40S&W hollow point was.

I wish I had pics

I was pretty close to the jugs. Prob about 3 feet away. Definitely got wet doing it. I wanted to be sure I got the "perfect" shot on them as I didnt want them to come out the side of the jug. Using regular milk/water gallon jugs, none of them made it to the fifth jug. I didnt keep track when I did it (wish I did) so I dont remember which penetrated more. The 45 and 357 were definitely in the 3rd jug. If I remember correctly the 9 and 40 were in the 4th but dont quote me on that.

My step dad used his EMP with 9mm TAPs and they stayed in tact. Not sure how far it penetrated tho.

I tried out one of my .45 Golden Sabers the other day and the core definitely separated from the jacket. Is that a particular problem with this brand? (185 gr.)
