HST Shooting Report

I saw a report from Dave Spaulding on another board concerning a police officer shooting a BG with 9mm 147 gr. +P HST. He was doing a house search for the suspect. The BG jumped out with a knife and the officer shot him.

I will take the liberty to quote Dave's report of the incident and the effect... "The blade missed but the officer got off a shot from a close retention position hitting the suspect in the upper chest at an angle. The pulled traversed the body ( from under the right side nipple up to the left shoulder)and stopped. The reaction was instant with the suspect stopping and dropping to the floor. He died a short time later. Penetration was 12 inches with an expanded diameter of .61."

I haven't seen many actual shooting reports on HST. So I thought I would share this one with the rest of the team as I know a lot of you guys are using HST. Good result IMHO.

I carry the .45 ACP version. But it is very good to hear that the 9mm version performed that well. The .45 ACP version has been reported to expand to .90 or even greater. Imagine something like that buzz-sawing through your body. Sheesh!

I run the Winchester Ranger T series, 124gr +p, or the 127 gr +p+.

Doesn't the HST emulate the "claws/Talons" of the Ranger ammo?

I think you could say that. Here is what the 124 gr. HST's look like expanded.

Here are the 147 gr. HSTs next to a 147 gr. Golden Saber. The HST covers a nickel.

Hairy little suckers aren't they!

Wow, I know what SD ammunition I'm going to stock up on...

Looks like the images came from: Bullet results after firing (has a nice image showing the HST expanded covering a nickel.)

Here's a link with photos of the Ranger T vs. the HST. Looks like HST wins:

Shooting The Messenger: Federal HST versus Ranger-T

I've heard of feeding problems with the HST .45 ammunition in XD45s, is this really the case? That'd be a damn shame. :/

Here is a Federal HST .45acp 230gr +p that I recovered from some jugs of water. Covers a quarter!!

There have been some reports of problems with .45acp feeding in several guns as well as the XD .45. I had thoseproblems initially but after a good feed ramp polish and some new +20% mag springs from Pistol Gear I have not been able to reproduce the feed problem again.

Every semi on earth has jam problems reported. 9 times out of 10 it is the magazines or user error that causes the problem. In the cases that we had here on XDTalk this was true as well since mags were generally the problem.

But guns and ammo are like marriage... you have to make sure that they are compatible and at least... like one another... love one another is best... but not essential to a successful marriage. My XD-45C loves HST and has never even burped at it.

Nevertheless, I split my load with highest reliability EFMJs just in case. That's just my sense of comfort as I like the EFMJ a lot all by itself. I like both of these rounds and would not have a problem loading out with 100% of either. To tell you the truth, I don't 100% trust any hollow point in a semi-automatic weapon. If it weren't for the capacity and reload issues, I would be shooting .357 Magnum as my primary weapon. But things don't always work out as one might wish. I am very happy with the XD-45C and Federal LE ammo. They are a powerful one-two punch.

I don't think there's a +P version of the 9mm 147 grain HST. I use P9HST2, which is the 147 grain load at standard pressure. Federal/ATK does make, I believe, a +P version in 124 grains.
