LSWC 200 gr!
hi, new to forums
recently got the 45 bi-tone tactical model; put 500 factory rnds thru; shot perfectly, LOVE IT! just started reloading as well. Dillon 550 came yesterday, bought all accessories and components (cramped in my apt, you wouldn't believe the makeshift bench I came up with, DIY $30 pc desk from walmart; strongmount is key!) ![]() and tried to reload for my new XD. Batched up 50 rnds, went to range, but unfortunately had many feed/extraction jams/problems. So in being a reload noob, I've worked past 4 hrs (it's 0124 now, have to actually go to work in a couple) to get some LSWC to feed and work w/my XD's action. I've read the other threads describing what the common problems were with SWC & XDs. Finished batch of 20 after experimenting w/3 iterations... they fed thru just fine:![]() 4.7 gr 231 winchester COL 1.265 .450 crimp (the smallest dia I could get) 200 gr LSWC from bulletworks.com .444 dia .635 length I am hoping the extreme crimp will resolve the ejection prob w/no stuck bullet & bore I ran all rnds thru case gauge, calipers then cycled thru action twice (slow and fast) multiple times....no jams! now i just have to shoot... will post range report end of the week! anyone have exp with this load data? Wow, that's a tight crimp. I keep mine a bit wider, but if it works, it works. I'm wondering if that tight a crimp might cause excessive pressures?? But I'm not an expert at that. Someone else can chime in.
I shoot wadcutters too and my XD has not had problems with them. One thing is that I load them a bit on the max side, but not to above the pressure limits. I think people loading wadcutters might have problems because most of the laod data is very mild and I think the XD springs are kind of stiff for soft loads. When I loaded wadcutters to lower velocity, I did have problems-- but they went away when I went back to higher powder charges. Nice setup-- you should secure that bench to the wall to keep the press stable. |

halted experiment with extreme crimp, realized it was too excessive, probably too much pressure as mentioned in above post, don't want to blow up my sweet gun, backed off and fine-tuned crimp to .459 for moderations sake
case gauged, calipered, cycled thru action, no jams... will shoot this batch instead |

You are not going to have a problem w/ pressure & your load. At 4.7gr, you are only moving along well under 800fps & pressures will be far below max. Good luck w/ the LSWC, I could not get them to feed 100% & each time they jamb, it dings the rear of teh mag., not worth the trouble IMO. There are other options like 200grLRNFP or LTC for light loads.

I also could not get LSWC work with my XD. I have read that others make it work, but not by me. It appears the ejected bass gets caught on the shoulder of the LSWC. Don't know for sure. 200 gr. LRN works real well in my XD. I am shooting the left over LSWC in my 1911. No problem there.

![]() Well I loaded 400 rnds SWC and shot 250 w/5.4 gr win 231... had 2 nose downs during feeding and 1 ejection failure. Didn't turn out so bad in the end. Just as some other threads say, some XDs feed SWC fine, and some don't. The up in powder made the difference from me, since 4.7gr didn't work out as well. It's awesome knowing that the ammo you just loaded shoots better than some factory rnds! Just ordered RNSWC from keadbullets.com and hopefully wont have ANY problems with those Last edited by saikocat; 04-23-2008 at 11:07 PM. |

Wow! That's a lot longer than I usually load mine. Maybe I'll give that a try. My 45 won't work with the LSWC even though moly coated. It fails to eject. My theory is that the wall of lead rips the casing off the ejector. It will shoot a single round out a mag all day, but not if the next round in a SWC. Shoots RN fine, factory fine, even when I alternate RN and SWC, it works. But it will not reliably eject a full mag of SWC.
I'll add a bit o'length and see what happens....I'm just not sure that it will eject a live round that long.

I've not heard many folks say that LSWC work in the XD well. Usual suggestion is to stay with RN or TC. I finally got a 170 TC to work flawlessly in my XD and now am very happy. Had to do with crimp and COAL that gave me fits. Finally followed instructions and it worked-go figure.
