SD Ammo - Have you considered this
I don't know what forum to put this in but this looked like the closest fit.
I was reading on another forum (actually a fishing forum) where a guy faced a burglar in his house. Everybody gave their take on the situation and one guy claims to actually have been in the same situation and made a shot. This guy faced a jury and had this to say: "Shot a burglar in 1992 after the cops said it was a legal shoot the family sue in civil court cost me 30 to 40 grand in legal fees and I won. So what I learned is; use a hi quality gun with standard ammo jurys dont like hollow points or or anything that can be termed "man killers" only shoot 1 0r 2 times if possible. I was lucky first gun I got to was a target 45 with lead wadcutters lots of damage easy to defend in court". What's everybodies thoughts on using standard ammo vs. HP or other in SD mode just to provide even more legal protection (especially in Civil Court)? |

Story sounds bogus. He "learned" that juries don't like hollow points, but was "lucky" that the first gun he got to was loaded with wadcutters?

If it is commercially available, I think you should be alright. Handloads can get iffy from what I have heard.
That's why there is a 12 gauge loaded with 00 under my bed. Two shots center mass should take care of any threat. |

its easy to make a case that hollow points are better for everyone involved in a shooting. 1. it takes less hollow points to stop some one (more kenetic energy transfered to the target) 2. they are less likely to exit, making bystanders safer. 3. most people who are shot die from blood loss, so its better to get hit with two hollow points and only have 2 holes in you, than to get hit with 2 fmj and have 4 holes in you. (asuming an attacker doesnt need 4-5 FMJ to stop them leaving them with 8-10 holes) I think any competent loyar should be able to convay this to a joury.

You go to a civil court it will be a crap shoot on convincing a group of your peers that your gun, ammo, or actions were not over kill.
You can bet there will be some bias about hp ammo with the jury. You can bet is you used fmj ammo it will also be attacked. Your state may offer some protection against this kind of suit. In my state there is none. You shoot a bad guy he or his estate will get some compensation. Around here it is usually a cash settlement since that is cheaper than going to court. A guy here in Az ( Harold Fish) was on Dateline about his self defence shooting and they also interviewed the jury. A couple of the jury members were very concerned about the caliber 10mm and the bullets (hp) used and said that did influence their decision to find him guilty.
