A large caliber, using JHP, is more likely to stop the attacker w/ fewer shots. FMJ or solids is just not the way to go. Assume you will be sued by the family of the dead BG that broke into your home. What you used to defend yourself & the circumstances has little to do w/ civil cases, right or wrong has little impact. The skill of the lawyers on both sides will decide who wins. IF this leaves you rethinking SD/HD, then don't carry/use a gun. Of course, the alternative for the victim usually sucks.
It's pretty easy for a decent lawyer to defend you if there are no legal charges against you. "My client uses this or that ammo because the local LEA carrys the same ammo to defend thenmselves & the population". It is probably a valid reason to NOT use handloaded ammo though, but again, right or wrong will have little to do with an emotional jury.

When my life and the lives of my family are on the line I'm not thinking about what a jury is going to think if I had to defend my home with a HP bullet or any type of bullet for that matter.
If anyone stops using premium HP defense ammo for thier defense gun because of what some people might think, then they should reconsider. Why compromise? State laws might have something to do with it, otherwise use what you think is best. Depending on caliber, ball can over penetrate alot easier and to me is alot less safe than HP ammo. Mind you some ball ammo is considered to be ok for SD but the HP ammo is more effective as long as it feeds in your gun. Those states that say you can't have HP ammo in you CCW firearm is ridiculous and at that point would only consider .45acp. |

I carry Federal Personal Defence HydraShock rounds in my XD40SC. I also have the same ones in my XD9. Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. "IF" I should have to pull my gun in self-defence, I fully plan to be the winner.
