What type of ammo?

I just bought an XD45ACP Service. I haven't shot it yet; however I'm going to the range this week sometime.

I have 2 questions concerning the ammo for this weapon. I would also like to use reasonably priced ammo for both of the questions.
  • What type/brand of ammo would be best suited for general range duty?
  • What type/brand of ammo would be best suited for self-defense duty?
I will use the self-defense rounds at the range so that I am accustomed to how this weapons fires them but I don't want to use them for general "just for fun" target shooting.

Thanks,
Tim

I have an XD 45 Compact and for the range I buy Blazer Brass or Winchester White Box at wal-Mart. For self defense there are numerous good self defense ammos available. I use Speer Gold Dot JHP in 230 and 200+P. I also like CorBon DPX. You will get many different answers to the question which self defense ammo to use. You will have to shoot some and see what you prefer. Be aware that it could get expensive so see what response you get here on the forum then narrow it down and then buy and try.

Ammo for general range use: Cheapest FMJ that can be found

Ammo for SD: Hollow Points... Yes, there are a bunch out there. The majority of them are good. Gold Dots are great and affordable compared to many others. I personally use Corbon DPX, which are more expensive. Main thing is...use a good hollow point. Do not use "frangible" bullets like Glaser or Extreme Shock. Just stick with a quality hollow point loaded to +P.

I'm curious...is this in any way related to feeding performance in the XD, or strictly your opinion regarding effectiveness of those types of ammo in general?

for factory ammo your best bet is going to be wwb or blazer brass.

I'm honestly not sure what my final sd load will be. right now i'm carrying 230grn hornady +p's at 1000fps at the muzzle.

I've got the XD 45acp Service model too, and I use WWB FMJ at the range and WWB hollow points for SD. No problems encountered with either...

Strictly my opinion. I'm married, so it is the only thing left that is still exclusively mine, so it's all I can give...

XD45 Ammo

A recent magazine article on the XD45 Compact found that the most accurate round was the Remington Golden Saber 185 BJHP.

If you still have yours instead of hers then you've not been married long enough.
