If it's for your XD, just polish the feed ramp and any name brand/premium self defense ammo will get the job done. The only thing to consider really is grain.

This is an excellent choice. This is one of the fastest loads you can get in 40. It has very explosive expansion in soft tissue and works very well. It does have some pretty snappy recoil but it really performs well.

I use it in my smaller Kahr PM40.

In a 4in gun i like the middle weight bullets in the 155-165 range. here the HST really shines. it expands quickly but not too much and has good penetration.

In a 5in gun I like a 180 gold dot. It has the weight retention needed for penetration as well as maintaining velocity.

+1 for the Cor-Bon 135grn. Recoil is s little snappy, but not at all unmanageable.

I have the Hornady TAP .40 180 gr. for my XD SC. Is this too heavy? Would a lighter grain be more effective?

I don't think the Hornady XTP bullet design is the best for a short barrel length. One of our members has done extensive testing with Ammunition for his department and he took several pictures of the expended bullets.

There is a 9mm TAP in this picture. While it is not 40SW it still runs at the same pressure level and a slower velocity in the 40. This means it will have even less expansion in a shorter barrel.

I would choose one of these in the 40SW. 40s are in the middle.
