Store Ammo in a Gun Safe?
I have always heard to store guns and ammo separately, yet I see gun safes advertised showing guns and ammo in the safe with other shooting supplies. I know it could just be marketing, but if in a gun safe is it OK to store ammo with the guns? What are the issues?

most of the references to storing ammo away from your weapon is due to children or inexperienced people having access. If you and people you trust are the only one's with access i don't see a problem. I have 3 loaded guns in the house, but no kids, so i don't think it an issue.

well its only so if a kid or drunk relative were to get into your safe then they only have either the gun or the ammo but not both. every one in my house knows about guns i grew up with guns laying out so the need to store them separately isn't as important. allthough my dad keep his hunting rifles locked up since he only used that a couple times a year.
i dont think there is any danger of the rifles loading themselves and discharging while locked in the safe |

Yea, I think that storing sep thing is just a safety thing and If you have no kids or company its not important. That being said I dont store my ammo in a safe, I put it in military metal ammo cases. The only thing you have to remember with leaving loaded guns all over the house (which I do) is that you secure them when you have company over who have children or are unfamiliar with firearms. Most of my friends are redneck gun nuts w/no kids (I am too) so not much of a problem.

What if you have a small mini gun vault on your bed stand. When you leave, and decide not to take your gun, you lock it up. Only you have access to this safe. No kid around. Would you unload the gun before putting it in the safe, even though that is the intent of the safe is to have quick access? Isn't the process of unloading riskier for NDs to occur than just leaving the gun in the holster at all times?

I've seen warnings along the lines of "Some states/cities require guns and ammunition to be stored seperately" but don't know of any off the top of my head. Unless you're worried about the fine (and who's coming into your house and checking anyway?) and as long as you've controlled access to the safe, why not store it in the safe? It's secure from theft, and that's where your dehumidifier is, right?
Every gun I've ever bought comes with the warning "GUNS SHOULD NEVER BE STORED LOADED" but I'm not about to unload the .357 in my bedside safe because the owners manual thinks it's a bad idea. |
