Shottie Ammo Thoughts
What is the best HD 12gauge ammo. Live in a townhome with common wall to neighbor. Thanks.

It all depends. I would say most anything except slugs.

I like Hornady TAP in "oo" Buck. But since that probably isn't an option with your living arrangements, I'd say a reduced recoil 2 3/4" cartridge with nothing larger than #4 shot
At close quarter ranges, that will tear a persons center mass apart as well as anything else. Plus the mass of the smaller shot is so light that it would be doubtful that a reduced recoil load would perforate 2 layers of drywall.

I have my 590 loaded with #4 buck right now but I live in a house so there is an extra wall and additional space to go through. For your situation I think #4 shot is a good suggestion.

Yup, #4 BK, NOT #4 birdshot, there is a big difference.

I have always heard #4 buck was a good compromise. I use 00 Buck, but the front of my living arrangement has a full layer of bricks on the west and a fireplace made with bricks that covers the south side. My room is in the North West corner of the house down a long hallway so from here I am pretty much covered.

I use #1 buck in my 1100. 18 inch barrel and a rural setting. 27 pellets .30 caliber each.

At very close range the birdshot will penetrate the body like the buck. But in his case he can afford to go through 2 layers of interior drywall. The buck will probably go through so he is better off with the shot rather than the buck... relative to overpenetration.
In my case, the kids next door are protected by two exterior walls between us and possibly some drywall. The #4 buck I use won't penetrate all those walls. If he has to shoot at greater than room distance the shot will not be as good a choice as the buck. He has a tough problem because he can't penetrate a relatively weak barrier.
