XD-9 Break-In Ammo

Hey guys, what have you all used and what do you recommend for beginning range ammo to break in the barrel? Also how many rounds have you shot of the break-in ammo before you started trying other ammo for accuracy or self-defense? I just got my new XD9SC about a month ago and have shot the better part of a pack of WWB. I'm guessing that I shouldn't be worried about accuracy yet, but would like to know some guidelines for a beginner.

Thanks for the great forum!

I shoot lots of Remington UMC, and it works well for range ammo.

I would recommed something like remington umc ammo or some cheap boxes of winchester, these work fine for range time also, I have had no accuracy problems with either of these. Also I wouldn't worry about having any kind of specific round count for determining what you need to use for self defense as I'm assuming you're using this for cc purposes, go ahead and start now. Those kinds of round counts are more for tight fitted 1911's, your XD should feed anything and everything you feed in it. For a cheap defensive round that works fine in XD's I recommend Winchester JHP, it's only $10 for a box of 50, it's what I use for self defense at home and on a budget, plus since it's the same price as regular ammunition, you can fire this all day long and know that it's reliable.

Anything and everything! Plus, dry-fire that rascal a thousand times.

I can't believe that you haven't shot a case (1000) since you've had it. I went through 500 in the first week-end. I've slowed down, only because of cost and I bought a snubby 642 for CCW during summer. You've apparently got better self-discipline than I do.

After about 300 rounds mine settled down and the only thing I wish for now is: more range time and more bullets!

Accuracy will continue to improve throughout your life, if you shoot more and more often.

I've tried every trick to get a FTF or FTE. Mixed +P, hollow points and jacketed ball, not a hick-up one. It'll build your confidence, try it!

P.S. Ask your dealer for a discount on a case. Got 10%, $19.00 off of my case of Independence 115gr.

My XD9 was my first firearm as well. My first trip to the range (after safely and thoroughly cleaning it) consisted of my blasting away at paper targets with 500 rds of WWB and a big smile on my face . It wasn't necessarily a break in period because it never jammed once, and I only fired 500 rds because that's all the ammo I bought at the time. They don't really need much breaking in at all, but you will find the slide and trigger will smooth out a bit after you put a decent number of rounds through it.

I've mostly used cheaper Remington and Winchester stuff bought at Wal-Mart and Dick's Sports - the usual $10-$12 per 50-round box stuff. I've put 500-600 rounds thru my XD-9 Service so far with zero malfunctions, including 250 rounds last Saturday.

I'm hoping to buy a couple more kinds of 9mm ammo soon just to experiment with it.

I'm no expert, but one piece of advice I've heard and will share is to make sure you try out any ammo you plan to use in the gun for self-defense. Try at least 20-30 rounds or even a box of 50. You need to be sure that ammo works in the gun if you have to trust your life to it.

Practice with whatever 115g FMJ that you have readily available. As others have said, be sure and dry fire. The difference in feel between my 8 month old Service and 1 month old SC is quite amazing. The gun gets SO much better with break-in. I haven't had much time to live fire my SC yet, but I have probably dry-fired it about 1000 times. It makes a difference.

A high power match rifle bbl. may benefit from a short break in period but pistols, nah. The pistol itself may need 200rds to smooth everything out before you trust it to CCW/HD, but the bbl. nope.

Thanks guys!

I had in my head things like quality ammo, copper fouling and stuff like that from working with rifles. Seems I was recommended a whole firing/cleaning sequence when I got my first rifle (Savage of course ). Guess I was just over concerned. Now all I have to worry about is sighting and muzzle flip. This 9mm is a snappy round! I mainly shoot 5.56mm, I adore the muzzle blast on them.

On another note, my main concern with this subject was accuracy. Is anyone getting any good groupings with these XD's? Are there trigger mods or any recommended sight mods that people are doing? Or is anyone on here reloading for accuracy?
