I bought some shotgun shells on clearance. Your thoughts...

100 round value pack of Remington Nitro-Steel-3"-Mag- 1450FPS-1 1/4 oz.-4 shot.

Originally $53.00 on clearance for $20.

Now I dont hunt, I just have fun shooting sheyt up in the hills with my 870p. My question is, can I shoot these shells out of my imp cyl bore 18" no choke police barrel ok? Or was it an absolute pointless buy? I figured with the ammo prices rising and these being $33 off the original price tag why not, right?
I did a search ont he net and it looks like they sells for $25 a box of 25. I got a 100 for $20, theres not way I could have went wrong. right? I thought I remember hearing somewhere thats hooting steel shot out of a police barrel wasnt to great of an idea, is this true?

It was a pointless buy. You need to box them up and send them my way for duck hunting next fall. Killer deal by the way. Nitro steel is close to $20 a box here for 25 rounds.

Cool , yea I know it was a good deal. But considering I only use a police barrel..... What do you think? I swear I remember readoing somewhere steel wasnt good in a police barrel, is this false? How would these do for HD? I really need to study the whole "shot" thing I dont really get it..

#4 shot would be just OK for HD. You would be better served to take them to the next gun show and use it for trading material to get 00 or #4 buckshot or even just a crapload of birdshot for fun shooting.

You don't say how old your 870 is. If its an older gun, then steel shot is a no-no. If its new, you should be fine. If it was built right around the changeover to steel shot for hunting, the barrel will be marked that it is OK for steel shot. If you don't know, then I personally wouldn't shoot steel in it if it were my gun.

And just so you know, IC does have some choke to it, just not very much. A true "open" choke is called "cylinder" or "cylinder bore." An 870P will have an IC choke.

Unless your 870 is pretty old you should be OK to shoot steel shot through that improved cylinder barrel. Easy answer to that is call Remington up tell them the specifics on your gun and they will tell you if your barrel is safe to use steel shot in.

Steel shot tends to pattern a bit more dense than lead shot in a give choke. So you Improved Cylinder barrel is very likely to produce Modified type patterns with steel shot.

As for shooting steel shot remember if your just shooting junk watch shooting something real hard like steel targets with it. Steel shot, being harder, like to ricochet off hard objects unlike lead shot that splatters on hard objects.

A for home defense steel shot would really suck! Steel shoot does not penetrate well at all compared to the same size lead shot. I have tested 3.5inch Magnum steel loads of BB shot on 5/8 plywood and the pellets were unable to penetrate the plywood. A 2 3/4 inch pheasant load of #6 shot manage to get a few pellets through that same piece of wood. #4 buckshot is the minimum most experts recommend for HD, birdshot is strictly for the birds and similar size critters.

By the way that was a great deal on the ammo. I think you will find that 1 1/4oz of steel shot going 1450fps is going to kick like a mule compared to your regular 1 1/8oz target loads that are usually 1100-1200fps.

I've got a couple of boxes of shells that are probably about, oh, I dunno, maybe 20 years old?? There's even a bit of corrosion on the brass heads.

They shoot just fine.
