How to develope load??
I have been reloading a month or so now, and know the procedure. I follow the published loads, but I have a question now...
How does one work up a load for something with NO information available? I know about reading pressure signs on the case, but where does one START working up a load.. And does the chrono serve any purpose in developing a load other than using the speed to figure the energy the bullet carries? |

While there are some general rules for developing any load, it would be a lot easier knowing some specifics of what you are intending to do. What caliber, powder, etc. A .357 load with Red Dot could be different than a .40 with Power Pistol. I would research on the Net. Usually you can at least find something similar to give you a starting point. Handloads.org has a good database of published and submitted loads.

Ok, lets make up a cartridge that does not exist and go from there..
Lets take a 45 super case and neck it down to .40... Hypothetically, I have a barrel custom made and the gun is ready.. Lets immagine I have the dies made.. I have CCI 300 large pistol primers.. I want a high pressure load, so I have Pistol Power on hand.. Where do we start at? |

Start by saying a prayer.... and then when you go to shoot this new load, say another one...

Well what you are looking to develop is basically a slightly longer version of a .40 Super round. I would start there.

I load for several rifle wildcats, no data at all. You would start by measuring case vol. Then finding a cartridge w/ sim. volumn & bullet dia. SO in the your 40x45, I would use starting data from the 10mm, case vol. should be sim. Work up in 0.2gr uncrements. Working up a load w/o a chronograph is really diff. While the chron does not measure pressure, vel. rarely comes w/o higher pressures. The chrono will give you an idea, along w/ fired primer condition & case head measurments, where you are going w/ a part. powder/bullet combo.

I think more useful advice would be to rig a remote firing device. It's not that difficult, and it's a heck of a lot better than having a slide in your eye socket, or a lack of a hand.
