i bought some hornady 68 grain BTHP bullets a while back and one thing i really didnt like was the tip was uneven. and at hundreds of thousands of RPM it seems like it wouldnt be the most accurate i never shot any targets with them just some bottles and such at like 50 yards so i really cant say if it made a difference or not.
i do really like the poly-tipped bullets and i would like to use those since it would seem like the tip would be more even. and i would like to keep the FPS as high as possible to shorten flight time and drop (yes i know at 100 yards its really not that big of a difference) and i also want a bullet that i can shoot whistle pigs with(thats what we call them here in idaho) and yes most bullets will kill one just fine but i really love the how explosive the high speed rounds are.(but again i havent shot them too many times and only with my friends bolt 223 with 40 grainers so i dont really know if the heavier rounds will have the same effect) |

I am going to partially hijack this thread as I was just about to post a similar topic.
I am breaking in my 24" 1:8 barrel and have a crap load of 55s but I want to pick up a few hundred different weights. In my case I will be shooting 100-300 yards so the 68s will be on my short list. Any other recommendations or places to buy from? BTW rogerxd45, Midway has some of the vmax bullets on sale in the lighter weights. |

This is what some of the meplats look like on different bullets. The gray moly coated bullets are Hornady 68gr bullets and the copper are Sierra 69grMK bullets. ![]() Notice the nonuniform Tips on the Sierras? The Hornadays look fine.

Moly does build up but only a small amount. It becomes abrasive above 65000psi. Depending on how you are measuring you aren't really supposed to measure from the base to the tip. There is a special tool for measuring rifle bullets at the "datum ring". Yes that is what I trying to show.
