Good to hear (I've been thinking of trying it), though I doubt anyone is afraid of using the +p in their XD, but rather the 45super.

By the by, 45super is a great round in a gun that can handle it.
Now that I work at a shooting range I get to meet a lot of people and check out their guns.

Got it.
Your first remark was a little off the wall.

I guess I need a little education on this topic.

What is wrong with the performance of standard 45 ammo? Does the +p and +p+ ammo offer significantly better terminal ballistics?

Is 45 +p ammo just loaded really hot? Could a reloader like myself make their own +p ammo? Does it require special brass?

Say a person reloaded with brand "X" powder that had a max load recommendation of 5.0 grains. Would loading to 5.5 be considered a +p load?

+P means "over-pressure" or more pressure(energy) than a standard charge will produce. Standard 230gr .45ACP loads are sub-sonic ~900ft./sec. and produce ~400ft./lbs. of energy. +P 45ACP loads can take the velocity to well into the supersonic range +1,100 ft./sec with energy being in excess of 530 ft./lbs. You will however pay for this performance with cost per round and increased fatigue.

p.s. as far as better ballistics, if the bullet is traveling faster then it will have a flatter trajectory and that will make your vert. adjustments less extreme between distances fired

Nothing.

Not at typical defensive range.

I carry HST +P in my 9mm but standard Gold Dots in my .45. If you hit a BG with a quality .45 hollowpoint, he won't know if it's +P or not (and he likely won't be around for you to tell him).

Anyway, all that stuff is academic. It's all about shot placement. If you hit BG in a non-vital area with a +P++++++ whatever, he could still keep coming. If you hit him around the bridge of the nose with a .22, the fight's over.

A standard pressure .45 will go through enough clothing and stop the BG even in winter time. Shot placement -- Focus on hitting what you aim at more than ballistic info. or whatever.
