Test ammo:
WWB 147gr JHP
WWB 147gr TMJ
Federal Hydra-shock 135gr
Speed GoldDot 124gr +P
Winchester Ranger 127gr +P+

Setup: Direct sunlight, 10 feet from chrono out of a 4" XD 9. The gun was tilted slightly to the rear so that the powder was closest to the ignition.

WWB 147gr JHP
Shot # - Velocity - Power Factor*
1 - 1024 - 150.528
2 - 1042 - 153.174
3 - 1035 - 152.145
4 - 1051 - 154.497
5 - 1043 - 153.321
AVG: 1039fps, 152.733 power factor

WWB 147gr TMJ
Shot # - Velocity - Power Factor*
1 - 962 - 141.414
2 - 969 - 142.443
3 - 959 - 140.973
4 - 954 - 140.238
5 - 933 - 137.151
AVG: 955.4fps, 140.4438 power factor

Federal Hydra-shock 135gr
Shot # - Velocity - Power Factor*
1 - 1081 - 145.935
2 - 1080 - 145.800
3 - 1092 - 147.420
4 - 1085 - 146.475
5 - 1098 - 148.230
AVG: 1087.2fps, 153.172 power factor

Speer GoldDot 124gr +P
Shot # - Velocity - Power Factor*
1 - 1248 - 154.752
2 - 1223 - 151.652
3 - 1249 - 154.876
4 - 1231 - 152.644
5 - 1247 - 154.628
AVG: 1239.6fps, 153.7104 power factor

Winchester Ranger 127gr +P+
Shot # - Velocity - Power Factor*
1 - 1231 - 152.644
2 - 1210 - 150.040
3 - 1247 - 154.628
4 - 1230 - 152.52
5 - 1293 - 160.332

*Power Factor is being calculated per USPSA guidelines, weight times velocity divided by 1000

Afterthoughts:

All of the ammunition was "more accurate than me". I'm not a great shooter at all but I had no fliers out of any of these. All ammunition functioned flawlessly without any malfunctions.

WWB 147gr TMJ - Plinking ammo obviously, is consistant with velocity

WWB 147gr JHP - The box lists it as "Personal Defense", looking at the results versus the hydra-shocks, and they're almost half the price of the federal, I don't think you can go wrong. I was glad to see that the "Personal Defense" ammo, even in the whitebox packaging was hotter than regular plinking ammo.

Federal Hydra Shock 135gr - A better bullet design than the WWB 147 JHP and just a tad bit hotter but I don't see much of an advantage. If anything, a disadvantage since the nickle casing is more susceptible to dings and dents.

Speer GoldDot 124gr +P - A great round design, velocities were consistant, and this was the highest power factor round tested.

Winchester Ranger 127gr +P+ - Such a disappointment from looking at the velocities, rated at +P+ yet only one round attained Speer's +P velocities. I fired 25 rounds of this ammo to only have the same results as the first 5 shots, so I didn't post them.

Conclusion - All of these rounds (even the 147gr TMJ) are adequate for self-defence. Afterall, what good is something that doesn't function?

The only reason I would choose the Ranger over GoldDots is the bullet design. I found the jacket on the SXTs to be much thicker than any of the others, thus it didn't seperate as easily.

I'm too tired to post the results right now, heading to bed shortly but their "black box" Supreme ammo is a joke. I had some of it chrono under the "Target/Range" 147s and that's just completely unacceptable.

The 127 +P+ disppointed me almost completely aside from the fragmentation part. The +P+ part of it is even more disappointing, I suppose their version of +P could be a bit less hot than Speer's, but so much that it takes +P+ to even get near Speer's regular +P? Oh well.

I did find the 380 Ranger to be nearly 90fps faster than the Supreme, if anyone's interested I'll post results on it. Though, either way - neither are as hot as Wolf 380, hell I had those well over 1,000fps. Those are almost painful to shoot in that light little Bersa Thunder! Lol

The biggest reason to get Ranger over the others is price. $10-15 for 20 rounds versus $20 for 50, if you're buying more than a box or two, you'll save a bundle - even after paying shipping.

Bottom line: They all go boom...and at the end of the day, if you're in that situation and have a malfunction, you may be laying on the slab, instead of your sofa.

My outlook on personal defense ammo is at the opposite end of the spectrum. I really don't care which bullet is the fastest, or has the most "power factor". I look at bullet performance only. It's what the bullet does when it gets there that counts.

Me too. To me it doesn't make much sense to look at the velocity and "power factor." The Winchester Rangers are well proven as one of the top defensive pistol cartridges around.

I'm carrying Gold Dot 124+p in my 9 sub for the same reasons.
