Exclamation Looking for a good cheap load for .45acp plinking ammo

I've decided that in addition to the .223 and .308 rifle loads that I've been reloading for years....I'm going to start reloading some .45acp for my 1911. With ammo prices getting upwards of $30 for 100rds of .45acp...I think I should be able to reload for close to half the price of store bought ammo.

I'm thinking about ordering one of the Lee 4-die carbide die sets....but I have no idea where to start with bullets, powder, and primers.

I'm not looking for competition ammo....just some inexpensive plinking/range ammo for my 1911. I would like to stick with 230gr bullets if possible.

What's the most cost effective (best deal) for .45 acp loads? Can someone give me some specifics on bullets, primers, and powder....and the place the has the best deals on the stuff?

Any info related to reloading .45acp would really help me out.

Thanks !!

I use 200 grain Ranier bullets for plinking. You can also go to the Nosler website store and see if they have any factory seconds which can save you a couple of bucks per 100. They tend to have "seconds" in one caliber for awhile and then another caliber for awhile so it's good to check when you can to see what's available.

For waht it's worth I use Winchester primers, Titegroup, and once fired Blazer brass. Eventually that Blazer brass becomes "7th time fired" brass but you get my drift.

Forgot to add that I do the vast majority of my reloading purchases through Midway if I don't do seconds from Nosler. Primers and powder are purchased locally to save on the hazardous materials surcharge.

I'm not a big fan of TG, BE or Clays, etc. Just not enough powder in the case & the pressure curve is almost vertical. The powder is the cheapest part of your handload, so I pick performance over cost. After all, you are only talking something like 0.004c/rd diff. W231 or HP38 is about as fast as I like, although WST works really well for light loads. The bullet is the most expensive part & dropping to a 200gr will save alittle. Lead bullets are the cheapest way to go, then something like Precision black bullets, then plated then jacketed. Pick up a good reloading manual like the Speer#14 & review. You can also get data from the powder web sites.

I have been using 230 grain lead bullets, cci primers, and tite group powder. I am getting the bullets for 67$, the primers are 25ish, and the powder is 18$. The brass is free. So for around 110$ I can reload 1000 rounds, that's 11$/100 vs 30$

You don't need diff. powder but a lead bullet takes abit less to reach the same pressure v a jacketed. SO if you have a jacketed bullet load, especially pushing max, you should drop the powder charge, I find 5% is about right. If your load is already mouse fart (pressure wise), then don't worry about it.

It's not 230gr but my light target load is 200gr LSWC over 5.0gr WIN231, CCI primer and mixed brass.
