Glasers aren't any better than the Extreme Shok for self defense.

Back in the day....
First off let me say that just because I didn't get my hand blown off is no guarantee that you won't. So don't do this at ALL. But back in the day my Dad and I used to make up rounds for personal defense. He told me they used to do it in the Army during WWII for the .45. Anyway the basic process was to weigh a factory round and a BB (we didn't reload but we had an old scale). Then score an "X" in the top of the jacket (no JHP's back then) with a big knife. We then used a .17" drill bit and took out the same amount of lead from the end of the bullet as the weight of the BB. You just keep checking as you go. When you got there you press fit the BB into the end of the bullet, trying to keep the overall shape and length the same. It was completely unscientifically impressive at the range. The stadard hardball out of our 1911 would punch a clean hole through the narrow dimesion of a 2 X 4. The modified rounds would blow them in half. Just remember, WE didn't know any better, you do.

You are thinking of the Glaser Safety Slug. The Air Marshalls quit using them because their terminal ballistics were questionable at best because they severely lacked penetration. Not to mention the whole myth of a bullet sized hole though an aircraft skin causing explosive decompression is totally unfounded. You could punch a crap load of holes though a plane and all would still be good for a while. What they are trained to do is avoid hitting critical components in the plane. Hydraulic lines, O2 concentrators, ect, ect.

That pretty much sums it up. You need to do a few things if you are worried about family members on the other side of the wall. 1. Don't take a shot in the direction of your family members. Maneuver yourself so your shot will go elsewhere if you miss. If that's not possible you need to make a very quick determination which is more dangerous, the possibility of you missing and injuring a family member or what will happen if you don't stop your attacker (ie will they take your gun away and do more damage to you and your family) 2. Do an analysis of your home, see if you can rearrange furniture so that large heavy items are between you and your family members. Also look at placing furniture so that it will channel your attackers into areas where it is safe for you to fire. 3. Train your family. Teach them what to do in case of an emergency. You teach them how to get out of the house in case of a fire, you teach them how to dial 911, teach them what to do in case of an intruder. 4. Get a dog. A decent dog won't let an intruder into your home without putting up a fight. My 4 kids share 2 bedrooms, they are across the hall from my bedroom. Depending upon where I stand in my room and where my children are located in their rooms stray rounds could easily enter their room. I've trained my children that if someone enters the house, or they hear me yelling commands at someone in the house they are to go to certain locations in there room so that I have more options in where I fire. It just so happens that their beds are large bunk beds made out of 2x4's. If they do as they are trained they will be down low behind 2 walls and 2 layers of 2x4 bunk bed and I won't be aiming anywhere near them.
