defense ammo .40 subcompact XD

What ammo have you fired and found accurate, functional and reasonably priced for the .40 XD subcompact? Does anyone have good hand loads that are cheap, closely simulate recommended defense loads for practice? Last question many years ago in FL a police officer shot a felon in line of duty, but caught hell because he had modifications made to improve his service weapon performance and I believe ammo. Well this lead to the issue of only buying factory loaded ammo for fear of legal issues of using hand loads as defense rounds. Is this still true today?

Can't go wrong with Federal Hydrashok or HST. You get 50-rds for the same price as others 20 packs. DoubleTap also comes in 50-rd boxes for reasonable prices (for SD ammo)

I wouldn't hand load self defense ammo... Why add another issue to an already HUGE problem if you ever have to use it?

Shouldn't affect a good shoot, but why test it, esp. if CCW'ing. Castle Doctrine laws should shield you from using whatever legal weapon and ammo you want, but walking around with a CCW may be a different story.

I really like the Cor-Bon DPX and I carry it in my XD. Most major brands will perform well from your SC, so look around and decide based on what you're comfortable with.

I carry Winchester Rangers. They are up there with all the fancy ammo at half the cost. I chose the 165 gr ones to compensate for the 3" barrel.

There's a big difference in the way a police officer employs his pistol and how you, the regular concealed carry citizen will employ yours. In the cases where a modification came into question, it was a police officer who had his gun drawn but did not intend to fire. You as a private citizen will only draw when it is absolutely necessary to use deadly force. Your finger will only be on the trigger when your only choice is to use force on force. Once you've crossed that threshold, who cares if you modded your pistol. The use of deadly force is authorized and it doesn't matter if you're using a broomstick or a full up race gun. The question at hand will be whether it was a justified shooting or not. Remember, you are not a police officer. The rules are different.

I've run the HST's through my SC from day one. Great round, flawless operation after at least 800 rounds. From the Federal LE site:

"Tactical is your single, best choice for precision accuracy and barrier penetration. Tactical Handgun offers an extremely accurate hollow point with outstanding weight retention, excellent jacket integrity and consistent 1.5 caliber expansion. It performs exceptionally well in shorter barrels."

I used to carry hydra shocks but switched to speed gold dot short barrel after reading about expansion tests in ballistic gel.

I love the cor-bon DPX myself. It just feels right when I shoot it. That reminds me I need to pick up a few boxes of it.
